 Sakenwah - auch Hunter genannt - ist ein Halbblut. Sein Vater ist Häuptling der Mimbres-Apachen. Dieser sendet ihm eine Nachricht nach Nogales, mit der Bitte wegen einer dringenden Angelegenheit nach Hause zu kommen.
Auf dem Weg dorthin findet Sakenwah einen mit Chiricahuc-Pfeilen gespickten Krieger seines Stammes. Sakenwah erfährt in seinem Dorf, dass auch ein paar Chiricahuc durch Mimbres-Pfeile starben. Mit Hilfe einiger Krieger nimmt Sakenwah die Ermittlungen auf und gerät in ein Netz aus Intrigen und Korruption, bei dem ein mächtiger Rinderbaron seine Hände im Spiel zu haben scheint. Für Sakenwah und seine Gefährten spitzt sich die Lage dramatisch zu.

Hermann Oppermann wurde 1937 in Hannover geboren und erlebte dort den Zweiten Weltkrieg hautnahe.
