Summary

When I was 16 I dressed in Victorian clothing in a bid to distract people from the fact that I was gay. It was a flawed plan.

No Shame is a very funny, candid and emotional ride of a memoir by one of our most beloved comedians. The working-class son of a coach driver and the youngest member of the Noel Coward Society, Tom Allen grew up in '90s suburbia as the eternal outsider.

In these hilarious, honest and heart-breaking stories Tom recalls observations on childhood, his adolescence, the family he still lives with and his attempts to come out and negotiate the gay dating scene. They are written with his trademark caustic wit and warmth, and will entertain, surprise and move you in equal measure.

My vintage loving self wants to be his new best friend

So I’ve only caught Tom a few times on TV. Not a slight to Tom I just don’t watch that much TV but I’ve enjoyed his performances. The book I loved, from his love for the golden days of etiquette, his flair for the dessert trolley circuit round the room and his self crafted Noel Coward accent.

I literally want to be his new best friend! Needy much? I don’t care he’s fabulous (reviewer metaphorically throws scarf over shoulder and sweeps out of room).

Very funny

I didn’t know much about Tom when I bought this audio book but it’s so wonderfully written and to have Tom read it made it all the better. He sounds like a genuinely lovely guy, definitely worth a listen.

Have no Shame you wonderful Funny Man

What a Lovely read vividly brought to life by the man himself! Growing up very much an eccentric odd bod in the London suburbs dreaming of Noel Coward and Alan Bennett, Top Hats and cravats. He was destined for the stage (funny bones)!
Do yourself a favour and read this you won’t be disappointed.

Loved it!

Laugh out loud! Although eccentric, very relatable. Even for people who are not closet Victorian women.

Proud

Loved listening to the lovely Tom reading this book over the last week. It’s really helped me live less inside my head if that makes sense. Thanks for sharing your experiences in such an open and honest way. I feel this will help so many LGBTQ people and I hope lots of people listen/read it.
