About this listen

Barclay takes the didn't-see-it-coming twist (of which he is master) to cosmic levels here and has the reader open-mouthed at his ingenuity throughout. His protagonists have depth and complexity and he is even prepared to tackle what is something of a rarity in the crime genre - forcing his readers to change their minds characters safely consigned to the moral outer darkness

I really like Lynwood Barclay, but I think he's been a little lazy with this novel. It's too much like other ones. He needs to take it away from a 'neighbour's house' and try something a little different. He's good, but relying on the same format each time is growing weary.

Very well written and well dramatised. But characters like Vince and his daughter Jane, give us a clear learning curve: Loyalty is deceptive and malicious, and shows no mercy to anyone.

I've read most of Linwood Barclay's novels, so I was surprised I missed this one. I enjoyed the use of two narrators as it brought more of a radio play feel to the piece.

A family has suffered some sort of tragedy (you never work out what it was, which was slightly annoying), and the parents are super-protective of their daughter as a result. When she starts going out with a local ned you can guarantee something is going to go wrong.

With the mum AWOL and that daughter unsure if she shot someone or not, the dad is made to stand up to the plate and take charge.
