About this listen

No Life Too Small is the joyful and inspiring story of the world's first animal hospice, celebrating the power and beauty of nature, the strength of the human and animal spirit, and the importance of love, friendship and community. It will leave you with a tear in your eye, a smile on your face and a renewed belief in human kindness.

A few years ago, Alexis Fleming was bedridden with a chronic illness. Things became so bad that she wanted to end her life many times during this period - but her beloved dog, Maggie, kept her going, especially when doctors gave her just six weeks to live.

Incredibly, Alexis fought her way back to health with Maggie by her side, only for Maggie to die of lung cancer two years later on a vet's operating table. Alexis was devastated that Maggie had died without her and decided to start an animal hospice in her name in the hope that she could ensure other animals nearing the end of their life would not have to die alone.

Six months later, the Maggie Fleming Animal Hospice was launched. Alexis has turned a dilapidated farm in rural Scotland into a haven for animals to live out their last days in comfort and at peace. With the help of the local community, despite many challenges, the hospice came to life.

Meanwhile, Alexis' own health was deteriorating again and she needed life-threatening surgery. Alexis came through the operation and the road to her recovery was paved with companionship from the animals in her care, particularly Bran, a dog who had been dumped with terminal cancer and given six weeks. He recovered alongside Alexis and went on to live for two more years. Dogs, however old and mangy, chickens, sheep, goats, pigs, cockerels and even turkeys: the Maggie Fleming Hospice is a place where all manner of terminally ill, abandoned animals come to live out their last days in comfort and are treated with love.

Looking after dying animals has taught Alexis what really matters in life - kindness, compassion and love.

Never, until now, have I read or listened to a book where an emotion is described and I've felt it myself. I laughed when Alexis was laughing, cried when she cried, was a nervous wreck when she was worried, and had a grin when she was happy. You genuinely feel you're living the story alongside Alexis and her family.

With a natural talent for writing, Alexis and her book will leave you with a restored faith in humanity. There are good people out there, and one of them wrote No Life Too Small.

The book and audio book should have a place in everyone's collection. Absolutely amazing.

Just finished the book and Audible version (only got them yesterday!)
It has been an emotional roller coaster, switching from sobbing my heart out to laughing out loud, and trying to stifle both at four in the morning. I can remember most of the names from previous social media posts and they are etched in my memory. This book and accompanying Audible presentation are wonderful and I will be reading it again and again and possibly playing it in my car, so long as I can control the tears. If you've ever loved anyone, human or animal, I would highly recommend this.
First time listeners should probably avoid driving or operating machinery!

Gets right into your heart.

I never write reviews but this book had it all! Read it! I felt every emotion going listening to this from sobbing my heart out to laughing out loud. The author is not only an amazing writer but narrates it so beautifully too that you become so invested in the lives of each and every one under her care as well as her own. It truly is incredible what this brave and big-hearted woman has achieved for so many who would otherwise never have known love. I always wanted to start a sanctuary but she has actually had the guts to do so and I am in awe of her. Thank you so much for doing what you do Alexis and I cannot wait for the next volume to hear all about all the characters large and small and their latest antics!

The best book ever!!!

This woman is an angel. And her story, which is really that of supporting actor to her furry, feathered and woolly chosen family, is one which everyone should read or listen to.
Narrated by Alexis herself, you hear all the joy and sadness she has felt and feel it acutely along with her. It’s a privilege to be invited into her world, and to be humbled by her selfless example. I wish that there were more people like her in the world. No life too small indeed.

Heartbreaking, funny and inspiring in equal measure.

I wish everyone could enjoy this book. It's made me so happy and Alex and her family and friends are inspiring. as are the animals she cares for. I love getting to know her animal friends whose personalities come alive as she talks about their backgrounds and quirks and simple joys in being alive. We hear how she builds trust and love with even the most desperate and mistreated ones. There's hope for us all with people like Alex in the world. Her writing in her own Scottish lilt is excellent and funny and her observations are unique. Her audio narration brought this out even more. To do all she does at the hospice, with an autoimmune condition, and to continually engage honestly with love and loss is an ongoing challenge she generously shares with her readers. Absolutely love it!

Alex shows us how animals love like us
