Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The extraordinary inside story of how Instagram became the world’s most successful app.

In just 10 years, Instagram has gone from being a simple photo app to a $100-billion company. The journey has involved ground-breaking innovations, a billion-dollar takeover and clashes between some of the biggest names in tech. But it’s a story that has never been told – until now.

In No Filter, Bloomberg’s Sarah Frier reveals how Instagram became the hottest app in a generation, reshaping our culture and economy in the process. With astonishing access to all the key players – from Instagram’s co-founders to super-influencers like Kris Jenner – Frier offers behind-the-scenes glimpses of every moment in the company’s life: from its launch, to its unlikely acquisition by Facebook, to its founders’ dramatic disputes with their new boss, Mark Zuckerberg.

But this is not just a Silicon Valley story. No Filter explores how Instagram has reshaped global business, creating a new economy of ‘influencers’ and pioneering a business model that sells an aspirational lifestyle to all of us. And it delves into Instagram’s effects on popular culture, rewiring our understanding of celebrity and placing mounting pressure on all of us to perform online – to the point of warping our perception of reality.

The resulting book connects one company’s rise to a global revolution in technology, culture and business. Facebook’s decision to buy Instagram was the best investment it ever made. But we’re still learning about what it has cost the rest of us.

Number one fan writes love letter to Instagram

An ok story but basically a worshipful narration of the authors beloved app and how wonderful celebrity culture was in promoting it.

The glorification of celebrities like the Kardashians and the negative portrayal of instagram’s contemporary tech apps becomes tiresome as does the deification of instagrams founder. Stick with it, as it is an interesting and well delivered story its just the focus on the fatuous Hollywood crowd and the adoration of the founder that does become a challenge at times.

Good story of one of the most important apps

Great for an entrepreneur understanding how this social media giant grew and how it had to compromise after been bought out. Good lessons of business to learn from here.

Fascinating

A great story of the birth of Instagram and how it become another tool of manipulation in Meta’s hands.

Absolutely brilliant

A really great insight into Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp from the view of their founders, staff and competitors. Well worth a listen for techies and non-techies alike

A fine book but not more

The book tells Instagram's story and gives a bit of an insight into Silicon Valley's ecosystem. However, there is not a great deal to be learnt from it and the story itself didn't feel captivating. Had to push myself to finish the book.

A fascinating mindset insight

This was a great insight into the people and motivations behind Instagram. I had no problem finishing it, and was generally captivated throughout.

Just after halfway, a lot of discussion goes into influencers and general social media explanations which interest me less personally.

I found the rise of Instagram and the seemingly small world of Silicon Valley a real surprise. The heart that went into it by the founders and the heart taken out by Facebook.
