Summary
The new must-listen novel from the best-selling and highly acclaimed author of Firewatching
Sheffield’s beautiful Botanical Gardens - an oasis of peace in a world filled with sorrow, confusion and pain. And then, one morning, a body is found in the Gardens. A young woman, dead from a stab wound, buried in a quiet corner. Police quickly determine that the body’s been there for months. It would have gone undiscovered for years - but someone just sneaked into the Gardens and dug it up.
Who is the victim? Who killed her and hid her body? Who dug her up? And who left a macabre marker on the body?
In his quest to find her murderer, DS Adam Tyler will find himself drawn into the secretive world of nighthawkers: treasure-hunters who operate under cover of darkness, seeking the lost and valuable...and willing to kill to keep what they find.
Critic reviews
"Comparable with the best of Michael Connelly’s Bosch books and James Lee Burke’s Robicheaux novels, and – naturally – Ian Rankin." (AJ Finn)

Who dunnit.
Narrator was talented in his delivery. Menacing as McKenna. The complexities of characters (a bit of a struggle sometimes to understand) were characterised by individual slights each of them possessed, each of them livened up, by the story teller. I think I would have struggled to read the book tbh. Enjoyable nonetheless

excellent story with twists and turns throughout. I yelped out loud at the ending, such a shocker but I need to know what happened next

Excellent
If you’re a fan of crime fiction this is a must. Excellent sequel to Firewatching. Great characters. Sad and funny - made me laugh out loud at times. If you know Sheffield you will love it even more. Can’t wait for the third one.

Even better than the first.
It really is, highly entertaining and brilliantly structured. Recommended for anyone who likes their crime twisty but human.

Excellent story with brilliant narration
Extremely good sequel to Firewatching. Complex in parts so you do need to concentrate; not one for falling asleep to ...
Narration really makes it. Jamie Parker's accents and both female and male voices of differing ages are brilliant.

Confusing
Confusing & boring. Nothing to get my teeth into. Took 3 attempts to get past chapter 3.

Had a lot to live up to... didn't quite
Firewatching was brilliant - a really tightly written book I couldn't put down, but Nighthawking just doesn't quite match it. There's a bit less of Tyler which is a shame, and his personal backstory narrative which starts early on doesn't resolve (it's clearly being held back for the next book, which is frustrating). But both those things would be fine if the story was as neatly and efficiently plotted as in the first book, which unfortunately it isn't.
Don't get me wrong - I did enjoy Nighthawking and will definitely be listening to whatever's next in the series but it just didn't match the first book. Jamie Parker's narration really did though - he is one of the most accomplished narrators I've listened to, up there with Emma Gregory in terms of the versatility of his voice and his ability to make each character so wonderfully distinct.
