When American heiress Gwen Barton aids an injured gentleman in an opera box in London, she shares a kiss with the stranger that changes her life. More determined than ever to be herself, in spite of the limp she's sustained since childhood, she will marry for love and not a title. She also resolves to learn the identity of the man she helped - and kissed. Surely he can't be the irritating Avery Winfield though. I liked the premise of the story and the factual background of concern about Germany, spying and American heiresses. Regency it was not, so for me there were some missed opportunities in scene setting - perhaps minor mention of the challenges to the Empire, women’s suffrage or industrial discontent? I thought the writing was technically accomplished and the narrator easy to listen to. However, ‘heartfelt’, being the one word clue in the summary overview, is like estate agent speak - for a bit worthy and a bit preachily religious. Nothing wrong with that if it’s your thing, but I’ll know better and avoid in future as, for me, it was a bit boring, despite the spying!

I liked the espioage theme. Likeable characters and a very good narrator. Well worth a read. I particularly liked the author’s note for context at the end. 5/5 stars.
