"Three stars," I said.
The book starts with a familiar but always intriguing premise: the protagonist wakes up in unfamiliar territory with no memory of who they are and how they got there.
In this case, it's the train of the title. The rest of the tale explores her journey of discovery. As she makes her way through the carriages she encounters increasingly bizarre situations and characters. Unfortunately, the scenes are often so random and disconnected it's a little like someone describing a dream they've had and expecting everyone to find it as fascinating as they do.
But it's an okay tale with some disturbing imagery and while I struggled with the narrator at first, she grew on me.
What stopped me in my tracks (ho, ho) was the extremely repetitive use of "He said", "She said",
As others have pointed out, once you first notice it, it becomes increasingly frustrating.
I understand some creative writing courses tell aspiring authors not to worry too much about repeating "said" as readers tend to skip over the word anyway, That might be true on the printed page but you can't help noticing it on audio.
Quantick is an accomplished writer for the screen and I wonder if this started life as a script and the author thought he could simply add in a few "she said" to the script to turn it into a novel.
It's a shame as I like David Quantick and his non-fiction work, but I can't give this novel more than three stars.

What a crazy ride!

Just brilliant and to cap it all off, the narrative was brilliant too.

What the...on a train.
The whole story reads like your having a dream about a train and how much weirdness can occur there. It’s dark and strange but also quite funny. I enjoyed the performance, though
Some of the she said, he said , they said we’re a wee repetitive.

Wonderful
I absolutely loved this book. It's very funny, very creepy and very exciting. The story is refreshingly original and had me captivated throughout. The narrator was also excellent. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

frustrating & dull
good performance by the voice actor, the story however was pretty dreadful.
always felt I wanted to shout get on with it!
