As it says, the majority of soldiers came from urban environments, and many had not ever been to the countryside, and even less of them during night time.

I learnt a great deal about the night proceedings in army manoeuvres and the author explained the need for strict controls on night exercises and only practice allows the soldiers to become expert in mastering the advantages of night time reconnaissance and attack at night. Where choice is available the author gives reasons for his opinion.
