Story
One day, it starts raining-and never stops. Global super-storms decimate the planet, eradicating most of mankind. Pockets of survivors gather on mountaintops, watching as the waters climb higher and higher. But as the tides rise, something else is rising, too. Now, in the midst of an ecological nightmare, the remnants of humanity face a new menace, in a battle that stretches from the rooftops of submerged cities to the mountaintop islands jutting from the sea. What hope does an already-devastated mankind have against this new supernatural adversary.

Michael Carmichael was a normal man - until the careening downward plunge of his life culminated in a near-fatal skiing accident. He should have died in the icy waterfall where he crashed, but he became the exception to the rule no being was ever meant to break. Now Michael is not quite a man, nor is he alive or dead. His image in the mirror is inexplicably, but undeniably, different. The voices of others echo in his head. And as his inward metamorphosis brings the wrath of the natural world upon him, he must venture back to the waterfall to reclaim his soul from those who plan a crueler fate for him....

Quality Horror from Brian Keene
- By MR J LAMBERT on 05-09-20
Summary
Pronzini makes people and events so real that you are living those explosive days of terror. An empty train yard at midnight...a small cabin bathed in the light of a full moon...a seedy Skid Row hotel in San Francisco....These are the places where fear lives, where the chill in the air has nothing to do with the temperature, and where Death can be someone you've already met.
Collected here for the first time are twenty-six terrifying stories by Bill Pronzini, a master of dark suspense and horror. These chilling stories span nearly three decades in his award-winning career, and most have never been published in book form. Prepare yourself now for an unforgettable gift, a very special delivery of...night freight.

Not what I expected.
I'm a hugh Pronzini fan. I've read all of his "nameless" books, his stand alone novels, and those he wrote in partnership with his wife. I've also read and enjoyed a few of his other compilations of short stories. These "Night Freight" stories, however, are lacking. They all build to a predictable and bland ending. Not Pronzini's best. I'm glad it was being offered at a special price when I bought it. These were stories that might have been better left unpublished.
