This was fine, very middle of the road romance. Hayden was a little frustrating because she didn’t trust Adam for reasons I didn’t think made sense. She was a logical person, it was pretty clear Adam wasn’t telling Hayden anything for justified reasons. Adam was consistent and swoon-ish.

Overall, the romance was not overly intense or intriguing, because it takes sort of a back seat in favor of the mystery. This book (I skip around series orders so this was my first) definitely looks like a rom-com based on the cover, title, tag-line, and blurb… it is not.

This has some pretty dark storylines from the horrific bullying Hayden endured, the (barely touched on) early sexual life Adam engaged in, fragmented family dynamics, extensive workplace misconduct and malpractice, workplace sexual assault and harassment, and…. Human trafficking.

I 100% anticipated this last from early on (I realized a few chapters in this was NOT the book I thought I would be listening to), but this is a heavy lineup of dark for readers. I am not triggered by much, but a lot of people are sensitive to this sort of content.

I’m intrigued by this author, and will continue with some of her other stuff… but like I said, this is relatively mediocre in the romance department in the face a dark mystery “sub”-plot.

Thankfully it is in the Plus Catalogue otherwise I’d have been a bit bitter about spending a credit on this due to the slightly false advertising.
