La sua, è stata una vita straordinaria, costellata di umiliazioni all'inizio, e di gloria poi.

Le vicende, le battaglie più importanti, i matrimoni, i figli, l'impero, e poi il declino, sono narrati dettagliatamente in questo libro che ha per protagonista il grande generale, ma non ne sono il fulcro. Il carattere e le caratteristiche del piccolo grande uomo, ne sono la parte centrale, e mettono in luce i suoi più intimi pensieri, i suoi legami, le manie, le idee che l'hanno spinto a compiere imprese davvero strabilianti. Brani tratti dalle sue memorie, oltre alle notizie presenti, danno a questo libro una valenza maggiore: è un'opera particolarmente piacevole e interessante, assolutamente imperdibile.
