Summary

Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charlie N. Holmberg builds her bewitching world of beasts and betrayal as the Numina Series continues.

Sandis has escaped Kazen’s grasp, but she finds herself unmoored, reeling from her thief friend Rone’s betrayal.

Kazen has been hurt but not stopped, and he’ll do anything to summon the monster that could lay waste to the entire world. Sandis knows she must be the one to stop him, but with her own trusted numen now bound to another, and finding herself with no one she can trust, she is in desperate need of allies. Rone seems determined to help her, but Sandis has no intention of letting him get close to her again. What she doesn’t know is how much Rone gave up to protect her. Or how much more he is willing to give up to keep her safe.

As chaos mounts, Sandis must determine whom to trust. After all, the lines between enemy and ally have never been less clear…and corruption lurks in the most unlikely of places.

Great story, but the female narrator over does it.

Love this storyline and the characters. But the female narrator simply over-acts on every single line she reads. Her voice is either quivering with fake fear or sounds like she is crying or ready to cry at all times. There is no down time, no regular breaks to simply...narrate. She never stops to over-acting through all three books. When the make narrator comes on its a pleasant break. I had listened to over a hundred audio books, and this series is the only one where the “acting” was do bad and distracting that I felt forced to write a review. Great story, fantastic writing on this novel. The partial delivery is beyond annoying.

Hate Book 2 in Series

Why is this SO bad. There's constant, repetitive mental beration by a main character. There's an insistence that the MOST obvious solution to the melodrama between the 2 heros is a simple 30 second conversation that must wait until 3 or 4 hours into this book.

If the most logical path is open to the characters, they ignore it. The main characters become conveniently stupid and clumsy at nearly every critical turning point in this book.... if they can fall when being chased, they trip and fall like a bad horror movie.... if there's a 100% wrong decision to be made, that's the one they go with... if they decide not to use an obvious advantage they have, it's chalked up to just not thinking of it ???

This was non-stop misery when combined with the narration of the heroine in this specific book.

Too Slow

I was so excited to finally have time for this book. To my great disappointment, it dragged on and on. I kept waiting for it to pick up. It never did. In agony, at chapter 18, I'm still struggling to endure. I am at the point of just wanting the book to be over because I am convinced that the storyline is not going to get any better. At this point in time i do not see myself going on to the next book.

Even Better than the First One

I think I liked this book even better than the first one. Maybe because I understand a little better what is going on now. Although there were still a lot of things that came as new surprises.

Sandis is now with her great-uncle, Talbur Gwenweg. But she finds that she is required to do things for him that are almost as bad as what she had to do for Kazen. She finds herself forced to flee from him too. And even though she doesn’t want to, because of how he betrayed her earlier, she finds herself joining up with Rone again.

They engage in a whirlwind of activities meant to destroy Kazen, and free the other vessels, but this just draws down new dangers and pursuits, and the results are not as satisfactory as Sandis had hoped. But in the end they finally learn what it all means, and what Kazen is trying to prove with Kolosos – although it’s still not clear what he hopes to gain by that. And they find that they are about to face the ultimate challenge.

I had this book from Kindle Unlimited, which in this case meant that I had access to both the Kindle and Audible formats. The narrators for the Audible version were good, although the female narrator sounded a little hysterical at times. That was probably on purpose, as I think Sandis was frequently somewhat hysterical in this book. However, it didn’t really serve her well, as it sometimes led her to rush into situations without thinking them through thoroughly first.

I'll be avoiding this narrator in the future.

Main character is voiced by Ms. Ezzo as "on the cusp of hysteria" for 50% of the book. Considering there are 2 narrators, that's a significant problem. Note: The second narrator is solid.

I could deal with the "too easy to fix" character flaws if I wasn't tempted to give Ms. Ezzo an anti-anxiety pill every 15 minutes.

I love Charlie Holmberg but the narration destroyed the experience. I have to finish the final book because the story is interesting, but gods, I wish this wasn't a trilogy.

Not her best work.

Too much violence. Confusing when Scott is talking like a woman and Lauren talks male.

Great story, very good narration.

The story is a little less intriguing than the first book, and seems like it's just a filler/setup for the third. Great two person narration
