Susan Calman has some very strong opinions, and in her radio debut she expresses them with her trademark wit and charm. In series 1, she examines the current hot political topic of equal marriage, looks at the issues surrounding the death penalty from the perspective gained whilst working on death row, considers how best to deal with depression and evaluates what it means to be Scottish. In series 2 she explains why she has never been interested in having children, explores society’s obsession with appearance, discusses intellectual snobbery and asks what it is that makes us human.

Editor reviews
Hugo Rifkind draws upon his favorite entries from past seven years of his satirical Times column, My Week. Rifkind recalls working as the Times gossip columnist in 2006 and thinking how much easier it would be to make things up about the public figures who refused to speak with him, Thus was My Week born, a series of diary entries from the fake pens of such sundry public figures as Tony Blair and Justin Bieber.
British Actor Michael Fenton Stevens gets cheeky with his performances of this smorgasbord of British and international politicians, entertainers, writers, sports stars, and royalty. Any news junky looking for a break will find this audiobook a pleasantly irreverent spin on politics and pop culture.
Summary
Since it began several years ago Hugo Rifkind's dazzling My Week column has been satirising the high profile and the famous, and basically anyone foolish or unfortunate enough to find themselves at the top of the news agenda that week. The column itself is a fictional diary parodying their movements over seven days in a rarely flattering but always hilarious manner.
Rifkind's victims are as diverse and as headline-grabbing as David Cameron, Beyoncé, Oprah Winfrey, Edwina Currie, Barack Obama and Pippa Middleton. This book collects the very best of this incredibly popular column, introduced and linked in a way that adds zest and background to the entries.

Anthology of Hugo Rifkind’s topical humour.
It’s a shame the author himself did not narrate his book. He’s on radio often enough for his voice to be recognisable, and he does not have an English accent. I’d never thought of “The Times” printing anything (intentionally) funny, but these articles indeed appeared in its august pages.
Hugo Rifkind’s eclectic selection of his “diaries” of someone or even something prominent in one week’s news doesn’t spare the mighty.
Although the articles are now a few years old, which might confuse younger adults or forgetful seniors, there’s a short explanation of context preceding each “week”. Unfortunately the entries stop before the absurd Brexit chaos, though Boris Johnson, as London Mayor, turns up regularly - such a gift to humour!

Well performed, surprised me
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would , especially someone who enjoys the (non)characters in politics. It's not my scene but I got swept up in the performance, the perceptive ability of the writer and his ability to turn what he perceives into something odd and imaginative. The only other thing I can think of with the same feel is spitting image. This feels like chilled -reading on the train back from a city job -spitting image.
Any additional comments?
After initially getting disappointed it was boring old prime minister stuff, I enjoyed it.

Hilarious
Hugo Rifkind's collected columns are almost guaranteed to raise a chuckle. His take on the people in the news each week is brilliantly crafted and laugh out loud funny. Michael Fenton Stevens' voice is great to listen to and I would definitely recommend this audiobook.
