Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
The exhilarating and startlingly honest autobiography of the living legend.
The long-awaited memoir by the icon of stage, screen and music. This audiobook is read by Barbra Streisand. It features Barbra Streisand’s iconic music, interlaced with exclusive anecdotes for the My Name is Barbra audio edition.
Barbra Streisand is by any account a living legend, a woman who in a career spanning six decades has excelled in every area of entertainment. She is among the handful of EGOT winners (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) and has one of the greatest and most recognizable voices in popular music.
Streisand’s memoir reveals a voice on the page that is every bit as heartfelt, entertaining and spectacular as her best performances. There’s the chilling story, which she’s never told before, of the origins of her legendary stage fright. There’s a hilarious opening line to James Brolin, who she’s been with for 27 years. There’s a page and a half correcting the record on the Streisand Effect, a term that refers to the way efforts to minimize a story can backfire, generating exponentially more press. As Vanity Fair said: ‘if Barbra could plug away for 10 years writing this exhaustive, exhilarating account of her life— then we can do her the courtesy of reading it from start to finish.’
Critic reviews
‘Exhilarating … leaves blood on the page … My Name Is Barbra is 992 pages of startling honesty and self-reflection, deadpan parenthetical asides (including a running bit about how much she loves going to the dentist), encyclopaedic recall of onstage outfits, and rigorous analyses of her films’ Vanity Fair
‘Glorious, exuberant, chatty and candid, a victory lap past all who ever doubted, diminished or dissed her, with lingering high fives for the many supporters . . . generous dollops of chutzpah … Nobody puts Barbra in the corner.’ New York Times
‘The book is crammed with delicious details of backstage arguments, bewildered suitors and at least one incident of falling off a London bus’ BBC ‘Streisand is no less than a living legend, one of a handful of EGOT winners (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) and now, she’s taking us all back to where it began. Streisand’s story is truly inspirational and it’s one that you’ll want to pick up again and again’ Glamour

Wonderful!
I listen to lots of memoirs and autobiographies via audiobook and I think this has got to be the very best of them. Ok, I'm a Barbra fan, but even if you are not her warm, insightful and candid style, accompanied by excerpts of relevant songs at key points in her story, make this a joy to listen to.

hearing Barbra talk so openly and truthly about her life..what an amazing gift to her fans
hearing Barbra tell her story in her own words is unsurpassed..the truth being told is so powerful , her honesty and show of warmth in its telling with the greatness of intergnity when sharing her feelings especially when others were mentioned and involved in her life..how she remained silent during their lifetimes so not to betray the friendship like a true and respectful friend who honored the secrecy and bond that true friendships must uphold. A fascinating insight to her career, her instrict and passion that she always gives to provide the best in all she does makes you truly appreciate her efforts as an artist and for me..a fan of 40yrs I continue to give thanks that Barbra has supported me through my life through her amazing work and her thoughts and actions contributed to her ongoing passion to influence the world as a whole has made me want to do the same in my small way..thank you Barbra and now you deserve your time and fun with your family..with love and greatful thanks x

Just Beautiful!
I’ve always been a fan of Barbra but having her tell her story to me was so enjoyable and incredibly moving, especially as I got to hear her sing and actually feel her passion & emotions. I’ve loved having Barbra with me every day and even she’s a year when it ended. I miss her already and so will have to listen all over again. After all, you always pick up new things that you may have missed just like when you watch a movie again. Thanks Barbra. You’re a doll! x

Tenacious
I am late to the Barbra party, but by Jove I’m glad to have experienced this book. It has opened up a whole new realm of wonderful music and films for me to enjoy. I take my hat off to her, she is a remarkable woman. Written from the heart and spoken with passion and love. Keep that energy flowing lass, the world needs more. J

Streisand at her most honest !
OK so you have to admire and love Streisand as so many of us do to want to listen to over40 hours of somebody talking about themselves - but if you do undertake this you will find the whole thing fascinating. It explain so much about the artist and how she got to where she is in such an honest way that one respects her even more for all that she has achieved and continues to do in her work and life. One very small complaint is the speed of the vocal extracts which sometimes seemed to be just slightly too fast, but that doesn’t take away from the overall genius of the whole audio version of the book.

Beautifully read
Being narrated by Barbra herself in her familiar Brooklyn accent this is such an interesting, intimate, honest and engaging 'story telling' rather than a read. if you listen on the train or bus you are likely to miss your stop.

U Thant
Did you tell U Thant that you were born in Rangoon ? That must have been a alternative conversation 🙂
