Summary

In this unique, profoundly inspirational memoir, Divorce Court star Judge Lynn Toler shares her mother's wisdom for learning to conquer anger and become immune to insult. Toler credits her mother's "rules" for life - a life that saw her grow up the daughter of a poor teen mother and endure a husband who suffered mental illness and alcoholism - with providing the grounding for her own success and happiness. Toler shows how the mindset of "a black woman who knew how to make things work" taught her the power of knowing how to manage one's emotional business-lessons that this book offers in wrenching stories written in spare and graceful prose. My Mother's Rules is an unforgettable book that will captivate readers with its illustrations of how to rise above the most difficult circumstances and find peace and success in life.

Loved it...just one little thing

I loved the story Judge Lynn shares in her book. After hearing so many audiobooks, I wish the production could have been less rushed. Sometimes you needed to take a breath after her wisdom before jumping right into the next thing. Again not a critique on Judge Lynn at all. I'm going to listen again and write the rules out (or just buy a copy of the book).

A worth while read (or listen!)

Her wisdom speaks volumes, and would help anyone's life for the better. Life changing for sure! Practical advice that will leave you wondering "Where was this book earlier?" or "Was it really just that simple?" Judge Toler outdid herself on this book, and I appreciate that both Judge Toler, and her mother, shared these rules with us. This book is worth every penny.

Thank you Judge Lynn Toler . I have even more respect for you, for being able to set aside your potential ridicule to help thousands of people like me who needed to hear this. I appreciate you from the bottom of my heart. May God continue to guide and protect you.

So Good

I love this book. I listened to it twice from start to finish and wrote all the rules down so I wouldn't ever forget them. Thank you for sharing your mother's rules. I can't wait to share the book and the lessons I've learnt from it with the people I love. I can not recommend it enough.

The rules every 28 year old should know about

I’m a 28 year old South African who early in the year realized I was at a crucial stage in my life, one where knowing and understanding the self was becoming a theme. I like how the book has helped me take a step further into understanding why I feel the way I feel and the necessity thereof. I have been feeling a lot of unnatural “stripping” away of some emotions which I now know is a good thing. Thank you Judge Toler for this amazing work, a piece I have longing to read since hearing about it on your show, for a year now. You are an interesting stunner.

Common Sense, No Non-sense Rules of Understanding

Lessons from mom are always right on time. She has the benefit of wisdom and opportunity to watch her children grow. Most of us could not understand, appreciate or practically apply these rules in our late teens and through or 20s. These rules are presented with real life at the forefront and humor as only Judge Toler can bring. Awesome job...thank you for sharing.
