Summary

‘I’d been in so many scrapes with Theo and he’d always saved me. Those days were the hardest of my life so far and...at the darkest point, those big brown eyes and that torn ear where I needed them to be. Right there next to me.’

PC Gareth Greaves first met Theo, a German shepherd, when he was a nervous 14-month-old puppy. They were instantly inseparable and police dog Theo became the best partner Gareth’s ever had. During six and a half years of active service, police dog Theo located, tracked and detained suspects leading to more than 200 arrests. In that time, he endured broken ribs and being bitten by assailants as well as being set on fire. From tackling and detaining an arsonist, to protecting Gareth from a gang of men with machetes in an armed robbery, Theo’s bravery knew no bounds.

Time and time again he put his own life at risk (often coming close to death) to save others. Even while off duty Theo has been a rock to his partner, providing emotional support as Gareth learned that some of the hardest battles aren’t always on the front line. My Hero Theo is the heartwarming story of one man and his heroic dog - and the bond that sees them go above and beyond the call of duty to keep each other safe.

Amazing story read by a fantastic narrator.

Theo's story is amazing. It gives you a real rollercoaster of emotions from happy to sad, from laughter to tears. It's a must read for anyone who likes dogs, like to read about the police, anyone with a heart really. The narrator is fabulous, it could have been the author reading it. My only comment would be that I want to know what happens next ... please write another one, Gareth :)

Fantastic Dog Egotistical Handler

The stories about this wonderful dog are so impressive but not so much the handler.Maybe if he listens to his own book he will realise how much he talks about his feeling and how unaware of other people's feelings he really was. I imagine his wife would have a very different version of their life.Personally what they went through was incrediable but it seems she had to cope and he hid behind work.

The most moving book I’ve ever heard

The emotional rollercoaster that this book has taken me through has, on more than one occasion, reduced me to tears. I don’t say that lightly, I’m a firm graduate of the school of hard knocks. But my heart is easily melted by a wet nose and four fury feet. Your story Gareth is a powerful one and I’m glad you are where you are today, both physically and emotionally. If you love animals, this story will put you through the mill. If you appreciate the bond a working dog and handler can have you’ll love this frank and honest telling, and if you value the police and the hard work and sacrifice they give, this is a read for you.

Insight

I have been gripped from start to finish. It gave me a insight into the police dogs and their handlers; and your relationships you have with the dogs. Please write another book Gareth ! Love it 😍

A true hero with a dedicated handler.

After seeing Gareth and Theo on This Morning and living in their area this was a no brainer for me. Such an insight into the fantastic work done by police dogs and their handlers. Uplifting and emotional.

There were times I teared up, times I was angry for Theo and times I just listened. Beautiful story.

excellent!

Really enjoyed the book, would recommend to anyone with an interest in Policing and in particular Police Dogs. slightly irritating that the narrator mispronounces Hough End throughout the entire book but it doesn't take anything away from the story.
