The child you never knew
knows all your secrets . . .

Out of the blue, Susie Jukes is contacted on social media by Anna, the girl she gave up for adoption fifteen years ago.

But when they meet, Anna's home life sounds distinctly strange to Susie and her husband Gabe. And when Anna's adoptive parents seem to overreact to the fact she contacted them at all, Susie becomes convinced that Anna needs her help.

But is Anna's own behaviour simply what you'd expect from someone recovering from a traumatic childhood? Or are there other secrets at play here - secrets Susie has also been hiding for the last fifteen years?

Critic reviews

Thrilling from beginning to end - I couldn't turn the pages fast enough
Excellent . . . Domestic noir in all its darkest shades
Clever plot twists and fully drawn but unreliable characters make for an absorbing and fast-paced read
A twisty, electrifying read
Delaney's tightly controlled prose style lends itself to expert tension-building
A well-researched and sensitive account of the most painful kind of parenthood

The book is good, but the characters are far from likable, in fact some of them are infuriating. I guess it's a sign that a book isn't so bad if it evokes emotions.

SPOILER alert.
Susie's made a huge mistake when she was young, that's understandable. But why, now being a responsible and settled adult person, does she dive headfirst into the same lifestyle, getting drunk and drugged with teenagers at rock concert afterparties? Why is she setting herself up as an example to her newly rediscovered daughter? She keeps saying, "I did the same thing when I was her age"! Yeah, but don't you remember what it cost you afterwards?
Also, I didn't understand what the point was of the woman complaining about Gabe's behavior years before. What did that matter for the story?

Good book, unlikable characters

Entertaining read

I Enjoyed this i found that i wanted to know how things were going to work out in the end for them.
Although i was very frustrated with Sky and how she was ruining things for herself and wanted to scream at her that she was been ridiculous.
Also was frustrated to the way Suzie and Gabe reacted to her and felt that there is no way you would be that understanding and forgiving but then struggled with the fact you would have a lot of guilt if it was your daughter and you had given her up for adaptation.
I was happy though to see it ended in a positive way and you would wish her all the best and that things keep getting better for them.
Over all a clever and well written story.

Enjoyable

An excellent read with brilliant narration. I did feel irritation towards Suzie and felt she was acting out her guilt on Sky therefore making it all about her feelings and not her daughters. Typical narcissistic behaviour, but that was what the author probably wanted to portray. The author’s research and writing was spot on as I knew someone whose story was very similar. This is another excellent book from Delaney.

Highly recommended
