Summary

You’re lying, sprawled at the bottom of the stairs, legs bent, arms wide.

If I squint, you could be playing Sleeping Bunnies. Or maybe Twister.

I wish I could tell you how the blood pooling around your head looks like a halo.

But you’re past listening.

I need to let the paramedics in. And then I have to be careful.

Because as the energy trickles out of your body it’s pumping into mine.

And while this could be a tragic accident, if anyone’s got a motive to hurt you, it’s me.

Bec and Izzy have been best friends their whole lives. They’ve been through a lot together - the death of Bec’s mother, the birth of Izzy’s daughter, Bec’s engagement.

But there’s a darker side to their friendship, too - and Bec is about to reach breaking point.

Then Izzy is found broken and bloodied at the bottom of the stairs.

It could have been an accident - perhaps she fell - but if the police decide to look for a killer, then Bec is sure to be their prime suspect.

This is The Rumour meets The Holiday, a compulsive thriller with a toxic but layered friendship at its heart that keeps you in the dark until the final few breathless moments.

Critic reviews

"From the intriguing and hooky first chapter to the final page, it held me in a vice-like grip." (Sophie Hannah, author of Haven’t They Grown)

"A highly addictive read...twists until the last page. Once you start Polly Phillips's debut, I guarantee you won't put it down until you're left questioning who's truly innocent...and who's not." (Gina LaManna, author of Three Single Wives)

A pacy thrilling debut!

This hooks you in from the get go, the opening prologue, and keeps you going, and guessing right to the end. Whilst the characters may all be flawed, they are all very real, and the author does a great job of creating the world around them to explain (most of) their flaws. Thoroughly enjoyable. 5/5

Very listenable but totally ridiculous

Right from the start the characters seemed very contrived and I couldn’t fathom why the two main characters were even still friends! Surely no adult puts up with that. It got increasingly ridiculous and have to say I sped thru to the end just to get it over with.

Great engaging read but disappointing last chapter

Thoroughly enjoyed this book but wish the ending had been more fully developed, seemed to not quite match up to the lead up to it? Narrator is fantastic! 1 star off for the ending, but still a good read.

4 stars until car crash ending of 1 star. Shame

Anyone who's ever had a bossy friend will enjoy this book, or at least identify with it. The plot was great, building the tension & characters consistently until about four fifths of the way through when it all went pear shaped. I won't give anything away but it seemed like the author let someone else finish what she'd started. The characters acted so out of character that it became sadly unbelievable, probably an attempt to make everyone a suspect but too heavy handed, rushed & clumsy, making me uninterested in the outcome. Shame as the rest of the book had been really good.

Entertaining

It’s difficult to find different things to say about books when you read or listen to so many. It was fine. No likeable characters though and I personally, need a character I can relate to and care about to fully enjoy a book.

Fantastic book, I would highly recommend this book

Loved it! struggled to put it down. I would definitely recommend this book. I struggle to get into books and sometimes drift off into my head and forget its playing, I was fully immersed in this one. I want another! Only problem I had was it kind of rushes at the end in the last chapter. like the last day of work before breaking up for Christmas hols, making sure everything is done but rushed. Still loved the book though.

Very good

This book keeps you hooked throughout. Really wish the end had been better, I was disappointed it was so undeveloped. Very good narrator, easy to listen to.
