About this listen

From 1934 until 1944, Mussolini met Hitler numerous times, and the two developed a relationship that deeply affected both countries. While Germany is generally regarded as the senior power, Christian Goeschel demonstrates just how much history has underrepresented Mussolini's influence on his German ally.

Goeschel, a scholar of 20th-century Germany and Italy, revisits all of Mussolini and Hitler's key meetings and asks how these meetings constructed a powerful image of a strong Fascist-Nazi relationship that still resonates with the general public. His portrait of Mussolini draws on sources ranging beyond political history to reveal a leader who, at times, shaped Hitler's decisions and was not the gullible buffoon he's often portrayed as. The first comprehensive study of the Mussolini-Hitler relationship, this book is a must-listen for scholars and anyone interested in the history of European fascism, World War II, or political leadership.

Good, easy to listen to performance that goes unnoticed, that is to say there is no sneering content which often betrays the bias of the reader on similar subject matter.
Seems very well researched and offers more plausible explanations to the relationships and events than more mainstream TV documentaries offer.
I think perhaps that students of the era would benefit from reading or listening to this; however a good prior knowledge of the main events would help in the understanding. Mick the Hick😊

Really interesting and explanatory.

A different approach to the history of the axis alliance and how it affected the war

The author adeptly portrays and analyses this taught and often superficial relationship between the two totalitarian leaders. The importance of diplomacy as performance is the main theme, with set pieces that seemed more concerned with symbolism than strategic cooperation.

The reader does a good job overall but should really brush up on Italian and German pronunciation, as there are several and repeated manglings of proper nouns.

Insightful

Why oh why does a British narrator feel the need to use US pronunciations, this is tediously frustrating.
