Summary

For fans of the New York Times best sellers The Last Punisher and Lone Survivor, a heart-pounding military memoir from a former Army Ranger sniper and Special Operations weapon sergeant turned journalist about the incredible highs and devastating lows of his career.

Growing up in small New York towns, Jack Murphy knew he wanted to lead a life far from the ordinary - a life of adventure and valor. After the 9/11 attacks, he immediately enlisted in the Army, knowing this was his chance to live the life he desired and fight for a cause he staunchly supported. After making it through the rigorous Ranger Indoctrination Program, he graduated sniper school and was promptly deployed to Afghanistan, where his experiences went from ordinary to extraordinary.

In this gripping military memoir, Murphy recounts the multiple missions he underwent as a Ranger, a Special Forces weapons sergeant, and ultimately, a boots-on-the-ground journalist. From enemy ambushes, dodging explosives, crashing terrorists’ weddings, and landing helicopters in the streets of Mosul, Jack provides a hard-hitting glimpse of what combat is like in some of the world’s most dangerous, war-torn places. With tours of duty in two of the most decorated units of the armed forces, Murphy brings a unique perspective to the military genre as he reflects on his great triumphs and shattering failures both on and off the battlefield.

Later, Murphy turned his attention to breaking news within the military. His stories have taken him from Iraq to Switzerland, from Syria to South Korea. From crossing Middle Eastern borders in the dead of night to rolling into an IED-laden zone, Murphy’s stories are always a thrill a minute.

Murphy’s Law tells a story of intense bravery and sacrifice - both on and off the battlefield.

Good soldier, Great man

I’ve been a fan of Jack for 7 years and I listen to the podcast on SOFREP radio. I ignorantly conceived this image of Jack after listening to him regularly. After reading this book I quickly realized how much he hadn’t said to the audience over a 7 year period doing the podcast. This man has some of the most interesting stories that show you what kind of dude he really is. I have a hard time finding role models for the youth when I look around but Jack is a real life “Captain America”. I’m not calling him a Boy Scout, he just keeps very accurate moral compass and he doesn’t blindly act. I look forward to the next book.

PS i can’t figure out how you managed to tolerate “George”(book ref.).

Excellent story dissapointing epilogue.

I really enjoyed Murphy's account as a soldier, especially his critique of the army.

But no mention of recent improvements, such as improvements in veteran wefare, increased spending on defence and a mission statement that has freed the army to fight and win rather than dishonestly report to please their masters.

But as the author confesses when you walk with the enemy ...

Good stuff, time well spent.

Having followed SOFREP for several years and Jack's work within the company, I knew I would enjoy this book. I suggest the audible version as he reads the book himself! I can't wait to read the sequel in 30 years.

I remember "Embrace the Suck"

"When officers write their story, it is called memoirs for NCO's it is called an expose." I served in the same Army as Jack for twenty years and fifteen minutes (canteen turn in at CIF slowed me down) albeit I served with the "normal" units such as 1st, 2nd and 25th Infantry Divisions. He can still articulate to anyone the trials and hardships that the American Warfighter experiences during their time. Jack will spark conceptual thought into what the service member faces before, during and after their time in service. He will inspire the reader to look at the "True North" when it comes to values and what traits we should look for in leaders. I thought I was going to binge watch the day away with some Netflix, but once I started I could not put down the book. Well done, Jack!

Great read

Great read and entertainments. I really appreciate the way he was able to actually explain the bullshit and the processes that are the US military and the failures at the high officer rank to preserve ones career instead of accomplish the mission.

Engaging honest account.

I hope that Jack continues his work as a journalist and writer. His honesty and willingness to talk about deep problems that affect the military and country are very much needed. I also went through this book in a day, is hard to stop listening once you started.

A Great Listen (and a great read)

An must read for anyone who wants to get a real story told by someone who was really there. I’m not going to tell you that you have to get it, but if you enjoy any military history, fiction or memoirs then I’d say you’re reading this review to get an answer to whether or not you should get this book.

Yes, yes you should. Jack Murphy tells you the truth and he does so at great personal cost in some cases. This is something that we don’t see enough of. It’s not often that I take the time to leave full reviews but this is something I think that anyone who’s lived through the last twenty years or who is thinking of joining the US military should listen to.

Jack tells it like he saw it, like he lived it, in his own words; in his own voice.
