Summary

All aboard a train bound for murder....

Kitty Underhay is looking forward to a week of long lunches and wedding planning with her husband-to-be, Captain Matthew Bryant. But the plan is derailed when he is called on to collect a former comrade-in-arms, arriving on the 15:50 from Paddington. As the train bearing Simon Travers pulls up to the platform, a piercing scream rises over the screech of its brakes. Travers is dead in his seat, a dagger in his heart.

Who gave this defenseless man a one-way ticket to the next life? And why? And could Matt’s close connection put him at risk? Only a few individuals had access to Travers’s compartment, and Kitty must find out which of these seemingly benign passengers is, in fact, a cross-country killer.

But when Kitty’s prime suspect, the travelling salesman with no merchandise, is found murdered, she is stumped - until she makes the connection between the two victims and realizes that this murderer has an even more deadly destination in mind! Can she stop them, before they strike again? Or will Kitty’s own next stop be the graveyard?

A pitch-perfect, and totally gripping, Golden-Age historical, cozy mystery! Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie, T.E. Kinsey, and Lee Strauss.

The Miss Underhay Mystery series was previously narrated by Alex Tregear, who is now beginning a new adventure as she trains to be an occupational therapist.

love the new narrator

Another excellent mystery with a train full of suspects. A few of the characters had very mysterious backgrounds which made the story very compelling. I felt sad for Mrs Briggs and her daughter. Some of the other characters were not as likable. The added drama involving Kitty at the prison turned out to be very exciting. I also loved that she and Captain Bryant got a dog out of this investigation. Canine cuteness is always a welcome addition.
Eventhough I loved the previous narrator, Karen Cass has done a wonderful job here.

Narrator- Vast improvement

If you love previous stories, you will love this one and I’m going to leave it at that for the story.
However, the new narrator, replacing the last ‘new’ narrator is SO MUCH BETTER! The voices pitched well and the over ‘aristocratic’ for Kitty, Matt and Kitty’s Grandmother (who was made to sound like the old Queen Mum) have been dumped. Thank goodness!
The narrator is giving all the characters an appropriate and distinctive voice making the story telling a joy to listen to. I will miss the original narrator, Alex Tregaron, but Karen Case is an excellent replacement. Bravo!

Phew!

Book 7 was seriously bad due to the narrator and had that remained so I would have not returned to this series, but on seeing it was now a Karen Cass which I knew from the Lady Swift series, I came back. Good to be able relax, listen and enjoy the story and not be lost as to who was speaking, their gender or coping with the personality shifts! Now again looking forward to the next in the series.

Another fantastic story

First off the bat I wish Alex Tregear all the best in her new career, she was a wonderful narrator and will be missed. Karen Cass is a great narrator and hope she will be the replacement for the books moving forward! I love her on the Verity Bright series, and her voices are perfect. I do feel sorry for Polly Edsell. I feel if she had been given more guidance she might of been good?

The story is really good I had a lot of fun with this one it was very inspired by Murder on the Orient Express. I have taken the train to Torquay, my dad lives there. I introduced him to this book series. Which he loves. I live in Surrey so I got the train from Redhill to Reading, then changed and down to Torquay. it's a nice ride. But I drive most of the time going on the A303 past Stonehenge.

I can spend hours listening to these stories but most of the time I'm so relaxed I fall asleep, and have to start back from where I can remember! But with this book I listened mostly when I was working or cooking with my headphones on.

I love Kitty and think she is a lovely and likeable character. Matthew is great and I like their relationship. I would like to see it be a bit more playful Matt can sometimes come across a bit to serious, or is that just me? Kitty and Alice are like sisters and really like their relationship too. I am about 1.3hrs away from the end and I think I know who the killer is? Small spoiler. I love the dog. I love dogs and cats. And Matt having a cheeky little dog is great. I just hope he keeps him!

Murder in First Class

This is another lovely murder mystery, where they find their charge murdered in the train when they try to meet him. With such a small group of people to find the killer from they thought it would be simple! Read brilliantly again by Karen Cass.

Another great book from Helena Dixon

I really enjoyed this book. The story had me guessing who did it until the end! Karen Cass did a great job of the narrating, after the last book which was someone new narrating which I didn't enjoy I thought I wouldn't listen to any more Helena Dixon books but whoooo with Karen Cass reading I look forward to the next book.

Better narration than previous book

Although the narration was better than the previous narrator it still wasn’t up to Alex T. It was slightly stilted at times when really there was no need for it.

The storyline was fine. I’d worked out who about 3/4 of the way through but still enjoyable. Not sure I’ll go for the next story as I’ve got to decide if I can stand the narration.

Narration still needs improvement

This is a great series and is well written, but sadly the producers were forced to change narrator after Book 6. The narrator chosen for Book 6 was dire (see reviews) and Karen Cass, chosen for this book, is definitely better but she has a habit of putting the intonation in her sentences in very odd places. It's off-putting and spoils a very good listen. She either needs better direction or another change of narrator. Alternatively persuade the original narrator to return as we are missing her!!
