The Qur'an, believed by Muslims to be the word of God, was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad 1,400 years ago. It is the supreme authority in Islam and the living source of all Islamic teaching; it is a sacred text and a book of guidance that sets out the creed, rituals, ethics, and laws of the Islamic religion. It has been one of the most influential books in the history of literature. Islam has been one of the most powerful religious, social, and political forces in history. Over the last 1,400 years, from origins in Arabia, a succession of Muslim polities, and later empires expanded to control territories and peoples that ultimately stretched from southern France to East Africa and South East Asia. Yet many of the contributions of Muslim thinkers, scientists, and theologians, not to mention rulers, statesmen, and soldiers, have been occluded. This book rescues from oblivion and neglect some of these personalities and institutions.

The Quran, a book which brings glad tidings to mankind along with divine admonition, stresses the importance of man's discovery of truth on both spiritual and intellectual planes. Every book has its objective, and the objective of the Quran is to make man aware of the Creation plan of God. That is, to tell man why God created this world; what the purpose is of settling man on Earth; what is required from man in his pre-death life span, and what he is going to confront after death.

Story
What happens when authorities you venerate condone something you know is wrong? What does this mean about what you’ve been venerating? No issue brings this question into starker contrast than slavery. Every major religion and philosophy condoned or approved of it, but in modern times there is nothing seen as more evil. Americans confront this crisis of authority when they erect statues of Founding Fathers who slept with their slaves. And Muslims faced it when ISIS revived sex slavery, justifying it with verses from the Quran and the practice of Muhammad.

The book provides a fantastic, brief and concise summary of the life of the prophet (PBUH), I remember hearing a lot of these stories in my childhood but it was nice to get them in a chronological order in such an accurate manner.
I would also highly recommend the" lost history of Islam" for a great overview of Islamic after the time of the Prophet (PBUH)

The narrator has done justice to a great writing on one of the most decorated figure of history. This biography was written in a way to enable to reader to delve into the life of Prophet Muhammad and not see it as a non-fiction. A great boigraphy of a great man
Thouroughly recommended reading, especially for those who want to know more about geniune Islam without having it fed to them by our biased media. This is regarded as the best biography of the great Muslim Prophet Muhammad (upon whom be peace) in the English . It is also in my opinion the greatest biography you will ever read on any historical figure. This is praise indeed, but indisputable for it is the combination of Lings' impressive command of the English Language-sublime, lofty, eloquent; his meticulous research and his honest, truthful, unclouded look at the life of one of the greatest personalities in our history, if the the greatest.

Fantastic Listen - Sean Barrett is fantastic
Where does Muhammad rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Top of the list
What was one of the most memorable moments of Muhammad?
Great description on the beginning of Muhammad.
What does Sean Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
He is the best narrator I have ever heard. His voice is amazing. I am going to go out of my way to buy audiobooks with his voice. Meem audio should hire him immediately to do more books, but also do an UNABRIDGED version of Muhammad as well. Also to get him to THE QUR'AN translation by M.A.S. Abdel Haleem (Oxford Books) as well.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
N/A
Any additional comments?
For people who want to learn a more honest opinion of Muhammad, I would thoroughly recommend this audiobook. It has a great narrator, well written English, and touches many aspects of this Prophet of Islam life.

Deceptive abridgement
The audio version is NOT the full text, but an abridgment. The advertisement does not notify the reader of this -- meaning that it is deliberately deceptive. I own the book version. There are only five chapters in the audio version, whereas there are 85 chapters in the written version. The audio version does not identify which of the original chapters is being read -- meaning that it is IMPOSSIBLE to connect the abridged audio version with the original text. Why on earth was this made in a way so unfriendly to people who would like to follow carefully?I am angry with this deliberate, misleading, confusing deception that is never explained to the purchaser. Shameful.

Beautiful Account of the Life of Prophet Muhammad.
This book is not a melodramatic or emotional account of the Prophet Muhammad. For that, you have to look elsewhere. It is instead a beautifully composed account of the Prophet Muhammad based directly on some of the earliest sources to the Prophet Muhammad including Ibn Ishaq, Ibn Sa'd, Waqidi, Azraqi, Tabari, and Suhayli.
There are variations of the Prophet Muhammad's biography, depending on what sources are used. This is to be expected. But Martin Lings is a very honest author, and he does little to inject his own opinion into the biography gathered from these sources. That is the true value of this book - composing the traditions about the Prophet Muhammad into a timeline, and helping give the reader a deep and connected context of what caused different events to occur.
The abridged version does not do justice to the book - it leaves out too much. But if you insist on listening to an account of the Prophet Muhammad's life, this is the book to read.

abridged version omits a lot
I understand that this is considered the best book on this subject in English, and the storytelling is good. The book seems to be very well researched, and the author conveys the history in a straightforward way, without excessively interjecting his own opinion. However, this abridged version omits entirely some of the major episodes of Muhammad's life of which I was already aware. My goal in listening to this book had been to fill in some of the gaps in my knowledge of the subject. In the end, I was left disappointed that I had not chosen to read the unabridged print version.

One of the standard Western works om Muhammad
If you want to get to know Muhammad through Muslim eyes, while not being able to read Arabic, this book is just the book. While it incorporates legends and possibly some myths about the prophet of Islam, it does give the reader/ listener an excellent overview of the man Muhammad.
The fact that it is abridged gives some force to the story and helps the listener to understand Muhammad's life as a whole. I've read the book in the past and find that the portrait is much better sketched, with some of the details left out.
I highly recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in Islam and especially its prophet Muhammad. Martin Lings did a great job of helping readers to understand this complex person.

A short biography with inaccurate accounts
I read the The Sealed Nectar - the most authentic biography of Prophet Muhammad - and now after reading this biography I can only say that writer couldn't do justice with the so much profound personality and many missing key facts and inaccurate accounts of some the aspects of life of Prophet Muhammad.
I would not hesitate to say that it feels that the less has been put into research and more has been added by borrowing form different books. Following are some of the key areas where writer has been flawed:
1. Age of Ayesha at the time of her marriage with Muhammad - which according to correct research was between 16-19 years.
2. The allegation that Badr War was resulted from the intention of Muhammad to rob the Quraish trade convoy led by Abu Sufyan - this is totally baseless.
3. He married with the wife of Zaid Bin Harsa because he was impressed with the beauty of the wife this influenced Zaid to divorce her.
4. The revelation of denouncing Zaid Bin Harsa from the name of Muhammad as his son to pave the way to marry his ex-wife.
There are many other accounts where writer clearly fell short of giving essential details, the Quraish boycott, preaching in Taif and Battle of Hunain is among some of them.
I would highly recommend to read The Sealed Nectar instead of the biography by Martin Lings.
