About this listen

“The biggest risk is not taking any risk.” (Mark Zuckerberg)

David Watts and Johnny Winall have over 30 years’ experience as independent bookies. Their shocking story takes you behind the scenes that some in the horseracing world would rather not see the light of day.

Their roller-coaster journey takes in some staggering tales from the Grand National, Cheltenham Festival, and Royal Ascot. Along with a refreshingly honest account of some calamitous business dealings, the book reveals how bookmakers think and hot to improve your chances of winning.

An intriguing insight into the world of sport and gambling. Astonishing, and extensively researched, Mug Bookies is thoroughly entertaining and a must-listen for anyone who likes a bet.

Very informative with humour throughout. I was intrigued by the sample and was not disappointed. Enjoyed narration and I think this story would appeal to a wide audience

Thoroughly Entertaining

I was looking forward to this- as an oap who has spent his life following horse racing but interested in most sports I found it almost boring as I knew 90% of the content - as a youngster it may appeal. I was looking for anecdotes of which there were many but the narrator had no idea of expression or timing- it may have been better with a great raconteur who knew nothing about betting.

Disappointed

I found it difficult to follow because of poor narration.
The racing stories just rolled into each other as there was no pause between them. Cheltenham, Royal Ascot and Longchamp could’ve been on the same day and they’re in March, June and October!
And there was too long a pause between chapters. Go figure. 🤷‍♂️
It’s a shame as quite a few of the racing tales were quite pithy.

The narrator spoiled it.
