Summary

In a modern and twisty retelling of Jane Eyre, a young woman must question everything she thinks she knows about love, loyalty, and murder.

Jane has lost everything: job, mother, relationship, even her home. A friend calls to offer an unusual deal - a cottage above the crashing surf of Big Sur on the estate of his employer, Evan Rochester. In return, Jane will tutor his teenage daughter. She accepts.

But nothing is quite as it seems at the Rochester estate. Though he’s been accused of murdering his glamorous and troubled wife, Evan Rochester insists she drowned herself. Jane is skeptical, but she still finds herself falling for the brilliant and secretive entrepreneur and growing close to his daughter.

And yet her deepening feelings for Evan can’t disguise dark suspicions aroused when a ghostly presence repeatedly appears in the night’s mist and fog. Jane embarks on an intense search for answers and uncovers evidence that soon puts Evan’s innocence into question. She’s determined to discover what really happened that fateful night, but what will the truth cost her?

Critic reviews

“[Eva] Kaminsky, as Jane, sounds young, savvy, and appropriately consumed by the mystery surrounding Beatrice's disappearance.… As Beatrice, [Carly] Robins sounds truly deranged, especially during her psychotic episodes and horrific self-mutilations. Despite cell phones, motorcycles, and computers, this contemporary Gothic works, thanks to clever writing and two exceptionally talented narrators.” AudioFile Magazine

“A modern American Jane Eyre…Marcott’s reworking of this Gothic classic holds its own.” Kirkus Reviews

“This imaginative take on Charlotte Bronte’s Gothic novel has several satisfying nods to the source material, but veers away just enough to create a refreshing new experience. Marcott’s Jane is a formidable protagonist…Fans of Jane Eyre who enjoyed Rachel Hawkins’s The Wife Upstairs will appreciate this equally enjoyable retelling from Marcott.” Library Journal (starred review)

Great story*

I wasn't to sure in the beginning. The narration was so cynical at first. I stuck with it and it seemed to get better. The story is so good that I'm sure glad I did! Great romantic mystery. Fabulous way the whole thing wraps up in the end!

Narrator Needs Guidance/Coaching

Loved the book but the cadence of the narrator’s voice was difficult to listen to. It had this sing sing up down qual to it.

Solid Story

At times I felt the narration took away from the story, but overall it was very good. And, the story delivered as promised -- a mystery filled with twists and turns, with a dose of romance. The author did a great job. The semblance to Jane Eyre was undeniable.

Disappointing, Hard to listen to the narration

I listened to the entire book thinking it would get better but it didn’t, and then it was over. I can’t say I liked it. I would not recommend this title.

Grey story!

This was a great listen and would definitely recommend. Main character/narrator of the story is a wonderful person and tells the story brilliantly.

Hmmmmmm, interesting 🤔

So different than I expected. Actually I didn't know what to expect, so it enticed me to listen. There was some vulgar language, which I didn't like. Nonetheless I enjoyed the story.

Would make an excellent movie!

I so enjoyed listening to and reading this book. I did so more often and faster than I usually have with even good books. It was suspenseful, kept me wondering what was the truth! I felt invested in the main character’s life and with what was going to happen.
The performer was excellent! She consistently voiced the different characters which helped make obvious who was talking. I highly recommend this book. I do think it could be made into a great movie!

Wouldn’t buy

Book had a good plot. Main female character becomes annoying as hell and in the time period the story takes place seems to become obsessed with the male character at the same time as believing the worse in him. Seems like the author was going for the 50 shades of grey mixed with gone girl. Not a fan of this book. Felt like I had to listen to the whole thing to get to the best part. Yes the best part was about 5 minutes.

Weirdly Haunting

Totally unbelievable story that grabs your mind and doesn’t let go. More fantasy than fiction, with characters who display obvious flaws and deceptions, but I found myself hoping the best for them anyway. Still, I wasn’t left feeling comfortable with the female protagonist’s choice. The men were not portrayed in a very good light, and the women were manipulated and victimized. The female protagonist and the teenage girl at least had plans to be in charge of their own futures, and that is what saved the book for me. The performances definitely added to the book’s appeal and I doubt I would have finished this listen if not for them.
This is a strange book, overall. I kept comparing it to Jane Eyre from the beginning. I’m sure others did, too.
