About this listen

I’ve loved Henry Hensley since I was seven years old. We’ve gone from best friends to lovers to nothing.

To most people, he’s the Chicago Falcons starting right winger and hot single dad, but to me, he’s my first boyfriend, my first kiss, my first love.

Eight years ago, that all changed when our lives took us in two different directions. Our break-up almost broke me, so I kept my distance until our hometown called me back to where our story began.

I promised myself a quick visit to help my family out, and then I’d leave town before he even knew I was back, which should have been easy. He’s way too busy being a professional hockey player and raising his son to ever find out.

Of course, I’m only in town for a week before I run into him, and one thing is clear from our brief encounter—Henry wants to hash out our past, whereas I’d rather forget it.

But my plan really goes up in flames when I take a temporary substitute teaching job, and on day one, his son walks into my classroom. Boom.

“Mr. Broody” is the second book in the standalone interconnected series “The Nest”. I read Mr. Heartbreaker first, Rowan and Kyleigh’s story. That’s when I first met Henry and his adorable son Bodhi. From the end of the book I was looking forward to their story.

The main tropes are:
🏒hockey romance
🏒single dad (adopted kid)
🏒second chance romance
🏒slow burn
🏒close proximity
🏒found family.

Henry and Jade were friends since they were 7 and a couple from 16 until after college.
Henry convinced her to go to Holland and work as a photographer instead of putting her career on hold for him. 8 years later, she is back and they start reconnecting. But things are a bit complicated with Bodhi being in Henry’s life as Jade is not ready to settle down.

I loved this book from the beginning. It is emotional but also very funny. Henry and Jade are soulmates but they have to work hard to reach their HEA.
The fact that they are mature helped them handle well the issues that appeared on the way. The romance is a slow burn, but the spice is good.
With all his seriousness, Henry has a dirty mouth.

I started to read the book on my kindle but switched to audio as soon as it was available.
The full cast narration is my favorite type. J.F. Harding managed to embody the serious Daddy Henry, and Brooke Bloomingdale was the perfect Jade.
To my surprise and delight there are also a few chapters in Bodhi’s POV. He is such a funny kid. Also, Teddy Hamilton does a great kid voice.

Overall I had a great time with this book, that made me laugh, cry a bit and swoon.
I loved the found family part of this story, that Henry’s friends are there for him when nedeed and Jade’s family is like his own.
The epilogue reveals the couple from the next book and I am happy that they are the ones that I suspected. There are some clues during the book. So I’m looking forward to “Mr. Swoony”’s story.

Second chance

A decent story line, but a few hours longer than needed. It would have been nice if the heroine had more confidence instead of internally whining. Used some words (like situate) too much. Generally easy listening though.

Decent but lo my winded

Piper, Holland isn’t a country and it’s not really a considered acceptable to refer to The Netherlands that way anymore. It’s kinda like calling the USA New York. Fine for New Yorks, not fine for… say… Texans. Or like calling a Scotsman British— i.e it’s offensive! Just a itty bitty note.

Otherwise, this is a weirdly tepid take on a second-chances. It’s not a trope that does well when everyone is this well adjusted.

For folks like me who always forget they don’t like CJ Bloom—remember!!! And know, she’s in it ALOT.

Not my fave from dead Piper Rayne, but alas.

Piper, NOOOOO!
