Summary

Motherhood is the true hero's journey - which is to say that it can be as harrowing as it is joyful, and enlightening as it is exhausting. For Jungian psychoanalyst Lisa Marchiano, this journey is not just an adventure of diaper bags and parent-teacher conferences, but one of intense self-discovery.

In Motherhood, Marchiano draws from a deep well of Jungian analysis and symbolic research to present a collection of fairytales, myths, and fables that evoke the spiritual arc of raising a child from infancy through adulthood.

Divided into three major segments similar to the stages of a hero's initiatory journey, (Descent, Sojourn, and Return), Motherhood charts how events like pregnancy, the calamities of childhood, and the empty-nest experience are all parts of an odyssey to which every mother receives an invitation. Here, Marchiano emphasizes that when you take up that invitation, it will lead to an adventure into the wild frontier of your own soul. And once you return from this inner journey, you'll possess the treasured knowledge need to clarify your values, embrace your disowned parts, and claim the mantle of motherhood in the full bloom of your empowerment.

An real gem of a book

I love how she weaved fairy tales with real life experiences. The use of rich imagery and messages about how motherhood transforms us is effectively and relatable. The narrator is excellent, it is through her voice that the book comes alive.
I will be waiting for her next book.

Stunning book. Everyone who has mothered should read

I love everything about this book. I am very grateful for it. Absolutely work of genius on everything Motherhood. I was on my guard, worried that the emphasis on symbols and fairytale was going to be American white only, excluding worldwide stories, symbols and experience. I was relieved it didn’t feel like that to me. Lisa Marchiano spoke to me of things I badly needed to hear. Thank you

brilliant listen for mothers

absolutely loved this book! a great, self-reflective read for mothers of children of all ages but particularly helpful for me as a mother of a toddler, just when all my buttons are starting to be pushed. I'm grateful to have these insights in my toolbox! and i loved the fairytales and how applicable they are all to the situations discussed in the book. I've just bought three hard copies to give to friends aa gifts, and will buy more copies come Christmas I'd say! loved it!! thank you Lisa!

yes, yes and yes!

This book has been so validating, so comforting, so understanding...
Relationships with my kids, especially my daughters are here, explained through fairy tales, personal stories, references to the author's clients and Lisa's total honesty... I cannot endorse the content enough. I feel relieved about my mothering for the first time in my life. I had 3 children, all have moved on to their own lives. My 2 daughters have daughters of their own and the book illuminated so much. I did okay!!! I can say that with a smile and true conviction after reading Motherhood.

Wonderful

This is a beautiful, original book. It's not a parenting book in the usual sense but an exploration of the meaning and lessons of motherhood using fairytales and Jungian psychoanalytical approaches. It's thoughtful and emotional and yet remains grounded in reality. I recognised so much in here. Really highly recommended.

Thank you, Lisa.

This book is profound and life giving. Both for me personally and also as a Marriage and Family Therapist. For the record, I’m a 37 year old man without children. I found much of the book directly applicable to myself. Both the adult me and little inner child me was touched and challenged. Certainly it helped me understand motherhood for the many mothers in my life to a depth that I’d never imagined before. And finally as a clinician it’s been quite helpful. I don’t think there’s ever been another book I’ve recommended so frequently in my whole time practicing.
Thanks.

Incredible. Validating. Insightful.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It touched my heart. It validated my experience. It piqued my interest. It gave me insight and it gave me hope.

I bought a hard copy to lend to friends. It’s just such a sweet, touching book. I want every mom to get a chance to read it.

The layout of this book reminds me of Women Who Run with the Wolves in that it uses fairytales to bring insight to whatever is being discussed. I loved the questions for introspection at the end of each chapter.

The one thing that took getting used to is that I am very familiar with the authors voice from her podcast and I had to get used to another person reading this book. The reader is great, though, so I was able to come to acceptance.

Inspiring and encouraging

As a psychotherapist and mother, I found this book both personally and professionally enriching. Every chapter validates my experience in ways I’ve never encountered before. It is thought-provoking, insightful, and reminds me of the journey I’ve walked and am yet to walk. I am so grateful for this treasure, and hope to impart it on my own daughter one day.

I am grateful that i found this book

Beautifully written about patterns in our psyke Women can be facing by being mothers. The author lead me through the book with her warm understanding of herself, the subject and, it felt, me and every mother. The shadow aspects of mothering was beautifully woven into the text and explained by using stories and fairytales. The text is smooth and easy to understand - even if English is not my first language. I feel this book is an important contribution to give value to mothering.
