Summary

Mortality Bites: Publisher's Pack contains Books 1 and 2 of the Mortality Bites series.

Mortality Bites, Book 1:

Mythical creatures are real, and the world is just finding out. Discovering that your neighbor was once an evil, blood-sucking fiend tends to bring property values down.

Katrina Darling’s only real friend has been murdered. And not just murdered - ritually sacrificed by a serial killer. Kat is sure more death will follow. She should know...she used to be the monster plunging the blade in. Trouble is, after 300 years of being a vampire, Kat has forgotten what it means to be human. One thing she does remember is that friends matter. Now she's determined to find whoever - or whatever - killed her friend before more victims surface. But just as the hunt begins, a mysterious young man discovers exactly what she was. Kat has a decision to make: run and keep her monstrous past hidden, or avenge her friend and save the city from a merciless serial killer.

Family Matters, Book 2:

Family matters...but so does breathing.

All I want is to be a normal college student, doing normal human stuff...you know - date the resident hunk, study, date some more. But when you’re once undead mother pops in for a surprise visit, well, that's anything but normal. I think it’s best to make good ol' mom's visit as short as possible. But when a deranged stalker from our past, hell-bent on making my mother suffer, interrupts our little dysfunctional family reunion, I’m forced into a perilous fight that could very well get me, my boyfriend, and everyone I know killed. I’m Katrina Darling, a 300-year-old ex-vampire who apparently still has mommy issues.

If you like the Dresden Files, Mercy Thompson, or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, then you’ll be helplessly addicted to the Mortality Bites series!

So addictive!

I found this series completely by accident in kindle, and took a chance on the audio before even starting to read. Gone gods damn this story for being so addictive, with such perfectly fitting narration! I'm completely hooked, and none of the other books in the Gone Gods world seem to be in audiobook :-/

GoneGod world and fun

What a wonderful and enjoyable unique take on the paranormal world that is without paranormals. Four years ago, the Gods left the world and when they did all paranormals lost their powers: pixies, shapeshifters, fairies, angels, demons, gargoyles etc. became Others.

Katrina Darling, the protagonist is a 19-year-old human and a 300-year-old ex-vampire. She retains her fighting skills but does not have the super strength of a vampire. She lives in a GoneGod world that looks upon Others, with distrust, trepidation and fear.

She is a freshman at McGill university trying to find out how she fits into the college experience. All she wants to do is to be human. Although Kat is an ex-vampire, she can identify with being a paranormal. Because she is compassionate and courageous, she fights for Others or anyone being treated unfairly. She uses her centuries experience in fighting and hunting to overcome bigger adversaries.

Kat’s team
Her roommate, Deirdre, is a warrior fae who pledged her sword arm to protect her. Kat finds she is more frequently protecting people from Deirdre who does not understand their nuances.
Egya an ex-were-hyena. He embraces his humanity while respecting and acknowledging his past. He knows Kat’s true nature past and present. He is her friend to support her and encourage her to accept herself.
Mergen is an avatar of the Turkish god of wisdom and war. He feeds on truth and is a sentinel lie detector.
Justin a human sophomore football player at McGill college. His is a straight A student and an all-around hunk

Book 1
A murder is committed on campus and Others are targeted. Kat becomes thrust in the mist of the murder. She receives threats to expose her past and her university life is jeopardized. Her first response is to run until she discovers friends paranormal and humans who stand with her without judgement of her past. Kat and friends fight paranormal and humans to save the school while seeking the truth to the murder.

I find Kat an engaging and funny character. After spending centuries alone, she formed the habit of talking out loud to herself, or “thinking on the outside.” It is an amusing faux pas that adds humor to the story.

Book 2
After centuries of being apart, Kat’s mother is once again in her life. Charlotte Darling, who was a homicidal vindictive vampire, spent centuries attempting to kill her daughter. Kat turned her mother in the hopes that her father would agree to be turned to have his family back. When that failed, Kat abandoned her mother to navigate the vampire world alone.

Charlotte’s visit is not just about a mother daughter reunion, but she has a personal agenda. Kat is very aware of Charlotte’s nefarious nature. Therefore, she is not surprise that her mother is being hunted. What is surprising is the hunters are the Divine Cherubs. The Cherubs were created centuries ago by Eoghan McMahon, Kat’s father, to hunt her and her mother. Charlotte and Kat fight for their lives and that of Kat’s friends while trying to overcome their difficulties.
