Summary

Twelve-year-old Montego al'Bou is an orphan, a provincial peasant boy left alone by the recent death of his grandmother. Possessing nothing more than his grandmother's cudgel, he strikes out to the capital where the influential Grappo have offered to bring him up in the luxury of an Ossan guild-family. He finds his welcome frosty, his new home full of confusing responsibilities.

He quickly discovers that the greatest sin in the capital is to be born without money, and the classist elite will not hesitate to remind him of his humble origins. Montego dreams of being his own man, of making it in the cudgeling arenas of the Empire's deadly spectator sport where even a provincial can be worshipped like a god. But skill isn't the only barrier for a wannabe cudgelist. Without allies, cunning, and a helping of daring, he can't hope to make it in the capital.

Enjoyable Backstory, Poor Audio

The story itself was good for the length - anything this short means limited character development, so start with book 1 rather than this one if you're new to the series. The author didn't waste time recapping concepts from book 1 - he just jumps into the plot without world-building a ton and honed in well on the few characters he does develop.

All that said, if I didn't manually EQ the audio out would have given me a headache to listen to it. The narrator's voice is a bit heavy on the bass from what I can tell, but the recording makes it sound like he's in a bathroom out broom closet. I'm not a sound technician so I'm not sure if the effect is reverb it whatnot, but it's literally painful to listen to. I ended up EQing for speech which helped it sound less painful, but it's a miss for the release to have such poor audio quality at the start. The narrator skies a fine job with the characters and his tone of voice fits - it's just the recording itself that seems to be a dud.

So listen to the audio sample first for this one! And if you don't like it go for the print/ebook.

Awesome prequel - audio too bassy

Great story of the rise of Montego. Very enjoyable. The audio is a bit too deep in its balance and sounds a bit distorted when you turn it up.

Great origin story.

A well written prequel, that expands the background of the three main characters.
Knowing more about their youth grants a greater appreciation of In the Shadow of Lightning.

More Montego

Great story about a great character. Only wish it was longer. Can't wait for the next book.

Too Short! Want more!

This is a great novella that lays out some of the origin of the characters from the Glass Immortals. It was so fun and breezy that it flew by. Highly recommend but don't use a whole credit on it. It's. too short to use a credit.

I would love to know more of the story in the prequel.

the champ is here

learning more about the champion known as baby Montego and his origin story along with Kizy and Demere, was awesome. to see him be unsure and lost to the eventual cocksure bruiser who backs down from nothing. won't spoil the first book, in the shadow of lightning. but this was a nice little slice of seeing the rise of the champ!

HORRIBLE Audio!

Have to say that the short story was long on "Cudgeling" and very short on advancing the "glass" concept... however...
Audible is not an immature technology at this point, so there's just no excuse for an audio book to be uploaded with sound quality issues as bad as this. Literally made my teeth buzz a few times due to the heavy bass undertones.

Fantastic short story

Brian McClellan is quickly becoming my favorite non Sanderson author. I love his worlds and his characters and I just devour every thing he puts out. So much good stuff and this is just more of it!
