Summary

During his time as an inspector with the Paris Sûreté, Monsieur Pamplemousse had been 'in at the death' on more than one occasion, but even he had to admit that the phrase took on an entirely new meaning when he was present at the spectacular ending to Cuisine de Chavignol, France's premier television cookery programme.

Seated in the front row of an invited studio audience, he watched in silent horror as the eponymous host, having downed an oyster in close-up, uttered a strangled cry and sank from view behind a kitchen worktop. Pommes Frites, sniffer dog extraordinaire, has his own views on the matter: Claude Chavignol was a really bad egg...

Jolly Good Fun!

I love M. Pamplemousse! The themes are slightly more 'adult' than Paddington but told cleverly in such a way that young ears would not be offended! I thought Bill Wallis performance is superb! There's a smattering of French throughout the story but to the level to what I learned at school (a long time ago)!

Just no

Didn't like the low powered grumbling narration. Found it annoying that the narrator didn't even know how to pronounce 2CV (the car... It's not a curriculum vitae, is it...). Sometimes, miraculously, he got it right, but it was rare. He generally struggled with French words, of which there are many.

The plot was sooo thin and contrived. Totally implausible ending.

Moreover, the author often describes things at length in just the boring way one would if one had consulted a couple of encyclopedias, cookbooks or webpages.

Other reviewers seem to love this book, but honestly, I hated it.

Too Racey.

Far too racy. A good story line ruined. I would much rather read the Paddington story books,

Slyly sleazy

The creator of Paddington Bear has turned into a dirty old man. It’s too bad.

Wonderful!

What could be a better way to spend a day than listening to the accidental adventures of M. Pamplemousse and his guardian angel Pommes Frittes.

Wonderfully written and wonderfully read.

I want a Citroen 2cv!
