This audiobook includes an exclusive Q&A with the author

Mei loses her Japanese mother at age six. Growing up in suburban Surrey, she yearns to fit in, suppressing not only her heritage but her growing desire for her best friend Fran.

Yuki leaves the Japanese countryside to pursue her dream of becoming a concert violinist in London. Far from home and in an unfamiliar city, she finds herself caught up in the charms of her older teacher.

Haruka attempts to navigate Tokyo's nightlife and all of its many vices, working as a hostess in the city's sex district. She grieves a mother who hid so many secrets from her, until finally one of those secrets comes to light . . .

Shifting between three intertwining narratives, Mongrel reveals a tangled web of desire, isolation, belonging and ultimately, hope.©2024 Hanako Footman (P)2024 Bonnier Books UK

It would be near impossible for me to word how bereft I feel leaving behind these three women. I feel so close to them all, moved so greatly by their lives and inner workings. I’m comforted knowing that they were all so well written, part of them will live with me forever.

The narration is beautifully executed, a rare thing to hear the writer bring their own words to life. It adds an extra beautiful layer.

I could not recommend this listen more highly.

An outstanding debut

I absolutely adored listening to this book. It is a true treasure! Its beautiful stories and its poetry are taking you to a different world, it's not always a nice world but it is real.

In love

I loved these characters so much I’ll miss them. Perfection narration too. It’d work really well on screen as the author mentions in the q&a it’s was originally conceived as a tv pilot, would love to see it

Adored this

This debut novel shows a innate talent for intelligent and intuitive storytelling. I really appreciate the time it apparently took to write, giving the “blood, sweat and tears” necessary to make such a beautiful piece of literary art.
The writing is raw, seems to be coming from deep inside and is full of the poetry around us in every day life.
Hearing the author’s voice made the novel come to life even more.
Bravo et merci pour ce merveilleux premier roman!
