Summary

In a world full to bursting with would-be heroes, Jim couldn't be less interested in saving the day. His fireballs fizzle. He's awfully grumpy. Plus, he's been dead for about sixty years. When a renegade necromancer wrenches him from eternal slumber and into a world gone terribly, bizarrely wrong, all Jim wants is to find a way to die properly, once and for all.

On his side, he's got a few shambling corpses, an inept thief, and a powerful death wish. But he's up against tough odds: angry mobs of adventurers, a body falling apart at the seams—and a team of programmers racing a deadline to hammer out the last few bugs in their AI.

what was with the rabbit?

why did that character turn into a rabbit? seemed really pointless honestly, I thought it was going to lead up to some big mystery but it was just some people like being rabbits. I had a few gripes with other stuff like this but in general it made me burst out laughing enough times that I can say I definitely enjoyed it. definitely a respectable first book for Yahtzee.

Terry Pratchett by way of every jaded game journalist made manifest.

Barring the repeated use of the R word, this has fast become one of my faves. Yahtzee's biting sense of humour and penchant for unique mental images via metaphors and adds to the characters and worldbuilding with some great satire of both the fantasy genre and the games industry. Looking forward to reading his other works (and the next episode of Fully Ramblomatic).

Great idea, great story, slightly odd recording

Yahtzee Croshaw is a genius. Every audiobook I have downloaded from his collection of works has been a roaring success. my only issue with this one is, well, that it sounds like he recorded it in his basement. There's a slight static background noise when he is speaking, and you can clearly tell when the mic isn't recording due to the actual proper silence rather than the silence between sentences. There are no announcements of chapter changes either, so keep that in mind if you are listening in "parts".
The story, though, is incredibly well thought out, full of Yahtzee's trademark humour, and the characters are easily recognisable and distinguishable by his range of voice performances. Having listened through and now knowing the ending, with the last 10 minutes similarly brilliantly thought out, I believe it will be even better on the second run through. Go for it, you'll not regret it.

Good story. a good reading, technical difficulties

so I was listening to this and I was enjoying it. it was clearly one of his earlier books but I suddenly started noticing some unusual things like whenever a line was finished, you 'd hear this kind of hiss stop. and I just was listening to chapter 2/two and I heard this alarm go off and I thought oh I wonder what's going off near me only to realize it wasn't anywhere near me. it was on the recording.

Great listen

Loved the story and the characters (most of them anyway). Was nice to see that Jim never truly understands, perspective is everything.

Funny, if a tad repetitive

Yazhtees humour carries the books lagging elements, but overall still an enjoyable read with fun characters, fantastic voice acting and a satisfying enough ending

The future of AI genrated RPGs looks bleek fo NPCs

interesting idear of first book, character is a bit unsympathetic for a suicidal depressed zombie whose exsistense is a whim of his developers. Slight similarities to 'Only You Can Save Us', but wat more sass and sarcastic dialogue. definitely enjoyable start to listen to Yahtzee Croshaw
