Summary

How well can you ever really know someone? As Ben Casper watches his best friend plummet from her sixth-floor apartment balcony, he realises his life is about to change. Diana had no reason to kill herself, she had to have been pushed. Diana worked for the CIA, so the investigation into her death is kept tightly under wraps. But Ben is a political journalist, and can feel that something isn’t right.

Ben starts investigating for himself and soon discovers Diana was leading a double life he knew nothing about. But when more people involved die in questionable circumstances, it’s clear that someone doesn’t want the truth to be uncovered. And unless Ben drops his investigation, he could be next…

One of my favourite James Patterson books

Good story, easy to listen. The twists were a little bit predictable but never the less and enjoyable book

Great romp.

Where does Mistress rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book is not as intense as the Alex Cross or Michael Bennett series. Can you imagine Alex Cross escaping from the crook on a BICYCLE? It is more of a James Bond type book (got to save the world single handed before lunch) It is fiction at it's most fictional. Few authors could have carried off this plot! I mean one man against not only the CIA, the FBI and the Washington Police Force, but the Russians and the Chinese as well, come on guys! Get real. However, as always James Patterson makes it not only believable but gripping. Our hero escapes death multiple times ( not giving anything away, as the story is told in the first person obviously he survives) But again because of the way the story is written I was holding my breath.
I wasn't sure about the hero Ben Casper . At the beginning I thought him shallow, arrogant, and a bit of a show off. However as the book progressed and his personal history unfolded I realised that this was a facade which hid his deeply troubled past and he was in fact a very caring and sensitive young man. By the end of the book I really liked him, and could visualize a series developing from this delightful character.,

What did you like best about this story?

The contrast between the super serious situation ( got to save the world) and Ben's flippant attitude. The totally irrelevant trivia.

What does Kevin T. Collins bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I doubt without Kevin's superb reading if I would have enjoyed it half as much! He made all the characters real. Ben especially became alive, his butterfly mind fluttering between his present situation and whether Julie Robert's was better in one film or another, or quoting what Abraham Lincoln had for breakfast was hilarious. His breathless description of Ben cycling away from the baddies had me exhausted!

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Both! loved this both have recommended it several times.

Any additional comments?

James Paterson is one of my favourite authors I have read all of his books. I enjoy them all. The best thing about them is there is never a "sameness" each book, even in a series is different. This is a perfect example, it is an adventure story, what I term a " boys own" but it is funny too. The pace is great .( I lay in bed listening to it until 3am because I couldn't find a place to stop. I HAD to get to the end) The one thing I was disappointed in was the the use of foul language. James Patterson is a great author and is capable of writing superb books without resorting to the use of such language, it doesn't make a bad book good, or a good book better. It is particularly upsetting when you hear it,I wish there was bleep I could use.

Stunning!

It’s been awhile since I’ve read/listened to a James Patterson novel, this was a stunning return. A good, unnerving story, superbly narrated by Kevin T. Collins! To be honest, Collins is the reason you would keep listening to this tale.

One gets the impression that Ben has Asperger’s Syndrome, a highly functional oddball! It’s not mentioned that he has and his childhood could account for his mannerisms, but he is endearing and, even though he may not think so of himself, I think that he’s more Jason Bourne than any of the others. (In joke, you’ll have to read it, to get it)!

This is a complex take, but not boring! But you HAVE TO listen to this version of the tale - you wouldn’t do the paperback version any justice - Kevin T. Collins is a star!

Spoilt by story teller

I have read all of James Paterson's books, . I have had this downloaded as an Audio book and to read . I did not like the narrator and could not get into this. I am hopeful I will be able to read the book itself to the end.

Thrilling story and Incredible performance by the narrator!!!

This book had me hooked from day 1. I’m a massive Women’s murder club Fan and I’ve also enjoyed many of James Patterson’s stand alone books. I think JP and David Ellis do the best stories together.

As for the narrator what a good job done! I’ve heard him in my last books ‘invisible’ and ‘unsolved’ (also by James Patterson and David Ellis) which were also amazing performances.
In this book tho he really brought the character to life great humour in parts which really added to the story I’m very impressed.
