She insists on the possibility of personal depth and common life for this century, nurtured by science and 'spiritual technologies,' with civility and love as muscular public practice. Edgy and often deeply personal, the 21 essays collected here come from a wide variety of writers. Some identify as witches, others identify as writers, musicians, game developers, or artists. What they have in common is that they've created personal rituals to summon their own power in a world that would prefer them powerless. Here, they share the rituals they use to resist self-doubt, grief, and depression in the face of sexism, slut shaming, racism, patriarchy, and other systems of oppression.

Solitude is the inspirational core for many writers, artists, and thinkers. Alone with our thoughts, we can make discoveries that matter not only to us but to others. To be solitary is not only to draw sustenance from being alone, but to know that our ultimate responsibility is not only to our partner or our own offspring, but to a larger community. Fenton Johnson's lyrical prose and searching sensibility explores what it means to choose to be solitary and celebrates the notion that solitude is a legitimate and dignified calling.

In this context, many have chosen to reconnect with Mother Earth as an embodiment of magic and divinity. Wicca teaches balance and harmony with nature, helping one find the inherent magic in the universe and within oneself. But as a nondogmatic and nonhierarchical religion, many innovations and forms have arisen out of the original tradition.

Why have societies all across the world feared witchcraft? This book delves deeply into its context, beliefs, and origins in Europe's history. The witch came to prominence - and often a painful death - in early modern Europe, yet her origins are much more geographically diverse and historically deep. In this landmark book, Ronald Hutton traces witchcraft from the ancient world to the early modern state.

Summary
A guide to invocations, rituals, and histories at the intersection of magic and feminism, as informed by history's witches - and the sociopolitical culture that gave rise to them.
When you start looking for witches, you find them everywhere. As seekers and practitioners reclaim and restore magic to its rightful place among powerful forces for social, personal, and political transformation, more people than ever are claiming the identity of "witch". But our knowledge of witchcraft and magic has been marred by erasure, sensationalism, and sterilization, the true stories of history's witches left untold.
Through meditations, stories, and practices, authors Risa Dickens and Amy Torok offer an intersectional, contemporary lens for uncovering and reconnecting with feminist witch history. Sharing traditions from all over the world - from Harlem to Haiti, Oaxaca to Mesopotamia - Missing Witches introduces listeners to figures like Monica Sjoo, HP Blavatsky, Maria Sabina, and Enheduanna, shedding light on their work and the cultural and sociopolitical contexts that shaped it. Structured around the eight sabbats of the Wheel of the Year, each chapter includes invocations, rituals, and offerings that incorporate the authors' own wisdom, histories, and journeys of trauma, loss, and empowerment. Missing Witches offers an inside look at the vital stories of women who have practiced - and lived - magic.
Critic reviews
“Here...we meet the witch friends we always wanted and find the coven we always wish we had.” (Amanda Yates Garcia, author of Initiated)
“Amy and Risa are the witches I was missing! Join them and discover powerfully creative yet complicated witches, whose storied tales were almost lost to time.” (Jinkx Monsoon, drag artist and winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race)
“I have been wishing for a book such as this for ages, and I’m so grateful that Risa Dickens and Amy Torok are the ones to have conjured it. Through their signature brew of scholarship, sensitivity, and bright spirit, these bewitching writers have crafted a tome that honors many brave and brilliant feminine magic-makers. I’m in awe of the trailblazing witches who are in Missing Witches - as I am of the ones who wrote it.” (Pam Grossman, author of Waking the Witch and host of The Witch Wave podcast)

Beautiful , authentic and poetic
This book is beautiful. Every Sabbath is honored with the poetic memory of powerful influential women, and the way we can bring them into our worlds and our practice. Along with heartfelt experiences of the authors. This audiobook is read by the authors which makes it authentic and real. I love every chapter and I plan on coming back to it over and over throughout the years. Especially when I need a reminder of who came before, those who helped shape my world and my beliefs.
