Summary

It was a time of crisis, a time of tragedy - and a time of transcendent courage and determination. Leon Uris’s blazing novel is set in the midst of the ghetto uprising that defied Nazi tyranny, as the Jews of Warsaw boldly met Wehrmacht tanks with homemade weapons and bare fists. Here, painted on a canvas as broad as its subject matter, is the compelling story of one of the most heroic struggles of modern times.

Powerful and Moving

This book is a thought provoking powerful tale of bravery and honour in the face of severe unwavering persecution of a People, it is a book I read many many years ago many times and I never fail to be moved by the story and characters within. This audio version is paced beautifully and acted well. It is well worth your time and trouble to read or listen to.

Powerful and moving

This work of fiction tells the extraordinary story of the Warsaw ghetto. It is a difficult and tragic history but very powerfully written and performed well. I first read this book in the early 80’s and always wanted to reread it, such was its effect. I returned to it this year to find the print so small as to be impossible to read comfortably. I was delighted to find it available on Audible and to find it had lost none of its original impact.

Great story, poor reader

I love the detail woven into Leon Uris' stories, but why chose someone who knows the words but cannot read. Ruined a great book.

True Heroism

This bestseller historic fiction novel by Leon Uris tells the heroic struggle of the Jews of the Warsaw ghetto. There were various groups that comprised the Jews of Warsaw. There were the Jews of the Judenrat, those charged with organizing into Jewish councils who favored complying with Nazi "directives" hoping that there was a trace of humanity beneath their barbaric and murderous decrees and that things would eventually improve. There were the religious Jews who hoped that the faith that allowed them to survive two millenia in the diaspora would sustain them. There were the rebels who favored resistance and struggle. Eventually all the groups came to realize that the Nazi plans were directed not just at subjugation but elimination of the Jews. A handful of non -Jews were also present that joined in the struggle to keep alive the memory of the heroic Jews who decided to fight back against the Nazi beasts. Mixed in are a couple of love stories which in my opinion were of marginal added value. Hence 4 stars rather than 5
David de Vries is a talented narrator who brings the story to life.
Overall an excellent listen.

Mila 19 - WOW!

I have read the story of the Warsaw Resistance from journals and letters ("Words to Outlive Us: Voices From the Warsaw Ghetto") and many, many 1st-hand memoires, but in Mila 18 Leon Uris gripped me thoroughly once again, drew me into the hideaways, bunkers, rubble, and yes--the sewers--with the brave ones, the frightened and desperate ones. As I drove, walked, worked, listened, I found myself cheering out loud, whooping, and weeping. The narrator just might well be the best I've listened to yet. He made even the sound effects come alive. Read this! You won't be bored and you won't be sorry. But you might be forever changed.

A documented revolt against tyranny

Finally, a story of the holocaust that has a suitable ending. Excellent story telling. You feel the characters and there are plenty to feel. I listened to this book twice in a row (45 hours) and was glad of it. The second time I was able to give the characters the wholeness that better positioned me to the necessary end. I would have like an ending autobiographical paragraph or two depicting the final days to the all characters.

Masterpiece

A compelling story, my first introduction to the Holocaust when I was in high school. 40 years and thousands of books later, this one has stood the test of time as one that has stayed with me. What a pleasure to reread it as an adult. Highly highly recommend.

A masterpiece by Leon Uris. Masterfully voiced by David deVries.

This is a story that is very hard to hear but one that must be heard in these times. David deVries’s performance was amazing. He brought each character to vivid life. Why this story hasn’t been made into a major motion picture is beyond me. It is a story of good and evil, love and hate, cowardice and great courage. It tells a heartbreaking story of events that we must never forget.

A MUST READ

Read on the recommendation from a friend I was heartbroken through much of the book and truly inspired by the end. As well, made much more aware of the historical experiences of the Jewish people through the centuries just by the full engagingly written storyline and its development of characters.
