Summary

Mike Mentzer was a strikingly handsome man with a brilliant mind and a "perfect" physique—the first bodybuilder to receive a perfect score in both amateur and professional competitions. In the late '70s, Mentzer rose to the very top of his sport (despite the efforts made by industry power brokers, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger), was featured in GQ magazine, and profiled on national television. But he was also a man who wrestled with mental illness his entire life and ended up living on the streets and being sent to prison. Just when it seemed his career was over, he found it within himself to reboot his intellect and revolutionize bodybuilding training, arguing bodybuilders should not forsake their mental development in favor of developing their bodies. He became a pariah in the fitness industry (which only cared about selling supplements and other products) but a hero to legions of fans who earnestly sought truth.

Mike Mentzer: American Odysseus is the first biography of Mike Mentzer to appear in North America written by his close friend of twenty-one years, John Little, "one of the leading fitness researchers in North America" (Iron Man magazine). Drawing upon audio recordings, letters, diary excerpts, as well as interviews with those closest to him, this is the true story of one man who stood up to an entire industry—and paid the ultimate price.

I recently heard about Mike Mentzer when looking up new workout routines on YouTube and was instantly drawn to his methodology and thinking. I wanted to find some of his workout books on Audible and found this instead and decided to give it a go. I wasn’t disappointed. It was great to hear about the life of Mike and his incredible albeit terribly short life, the injustices and trauma he suffered with not only the Mr Olympia 1980 but his mental illness and later in life poor health, then to somehow turn it all around to became a success again or start some new venture, to find some happiness or love just shows what a person can do with the right mentality and morals. I loved every minute of this audio book and also learning more about my newest idol Mike Mentzer. 5 stars!

One of the saddest stories I’ve ever listened too!

Touching and objective biography from the perspective on not just a talented writer but a true friend of Mentzer.

Highly recommend for fans of Mike. Inspiring, poingent and by the end of it will have you question what you thought you know about training and bodybuilding.

Fantastically written and a great performance.

Basically, 1/3 Mike Mentzer Bio (great), 1/3 Swartzeneger is a jerk (lol) and 1/3 Ayne Rand (not my cup of tea).

RIP Mike, you were a legend 💪
