I was pleasantly surprised. There are elements of the above - perhaps more new age spiritual bunkum than religion - but generally the content is good humoured, grounded and practical. There was only one chapter that felt a little too "American" for my tastes and I ended up fast forwarding.
I've read a number of books that claim the benefits of affirmations and I've always considered their apparently magical properties to be unsubstantiated. Here Canfield provides the first logical explanation as to why they might work I've come across which means I much more likely to persist with them.
The style of reading is good too. Much of the recording is of Canfield presenting to a small, appreciative crowd. But don't let that lead you to expect one of those awful shouty 'motivational speakers'. I found his style engaging, considered and often amusing.
In between these sessions, Canfield summarises and explains direct to the listener. It's a style I found I really liked.
One final thing that amused me. A few years ago a guy I worked with decided he was going to become a motivational speaker and I went to see him once. He told a story about he had wondered down a beach tossing stranded starfish back into the sea. Tears welled up in his eyes as he described the profound effect this had on him. Listening to this tape I realise he nicked the whole story from Canfied!
