Summary

The first English-language biography of Formula 1’s hottest new talent, Dutchman Max Verstappen.

Few drivers have ever shaken up Formula 1 in quite the same way as Verstappen. Already the youngest competitor in F1 history, having made his breakthrough in 2015 aged just 17, his debut race for Red Bull at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix saw him become the youngest driver ever to win a race, achieve a podium finish or even lead a lap.

As sports journalist James Gray deftly shows, as son of F1 legend Jos and elite-level kart driver Sophie Kumpen, Max was destined to be a racing driver. And since that headline-grabbing debut, he has continued to make an indelible impression on the sport, courting criticism and plaudits in equal measure.

Published on the eve of the first Dutch Grand Prix for 36 years, Gray’s biography seeks to understand the outspoken nature and aggressive driving style that make Verstappen a must-watch before, during and after races, and why his Dutch fans, who turn up to cheer him on in their orange-clad droves, are quite so fanatical.

Informative

As a Max fan, I enjoyed this a lot. The story of his life is obviously not up to date considering that his career is still unfolding but it gives a very good idea of where he has come from. There is a lot of tangents that the writer embarks on throughout the book, probably to pad it out but I honestly enjoyed the little bits of f1 history that were included.

Interesting insight but flawed

When it focussed on Max and the Verstappen family and friends, it was an interesting, insightful biography.
Unfortunately it seemed to go way off-track at times, going into a load of irrelevant detail about other topics.
The performance does not seem to have benefited from anyone giving the artist notes on pronunciation.
A couple of examples:
“Jos” pronounced JOSS not YOSS
“Caterham” pronounced CATTERHAM.
This gave the feeling that the story was being read out by someone with no experience of the content.

Excellent insight

Really enjoyable insight into Max Verstappen. Well written and great insight into his relationship with his father, his young career and how he became his own man and driver. Highly recommend

Would highly recommend to any Max Verstappen fan! Hearing how his life went from his carting days to F1 was an amazing listen.
