L'esordio dell'autore risale al 1882, quando la casa editrice Ricordi lo mise sotto contratto e fece pubblicare Nannì e E ghiammoncenne me'.
Alcuni suoi versi del 1885, non particolarmente amati dall'autore (tanto da non essere inseriti nelle raccolte da lui curate personalmente), sono stati musicati dal compositore abruzzese Francesco Paolo Tosti per quella che resta una delle più famose canzoni in lingua napoletana, "Marechiaro", e dal musicista tarantino-napoletano Mario Pasquale Costa di cui ricordiamo anche "Era de maggio", in cui due giovani innamorati ricordano il loro primo incontro: a maggio, in un giardino profumato di rose.
