Summary

--WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER--

The Gospel of Mary Magdalene reveals a very different love story from the one we've come to refer to as Christianity. Harvard-trained theologian Meggan Watterson leads us verse by verse through Mary's gospel to illuminate the powerful teachings it contains.

A gospel, as ancient and authentic as any of the gospels that the Christian bible contains, was buried deep in the Egyptian desert after an edict was sent out in the 4th century to have all copies of it destroyed. Fortunately, some rebel monks were wise enough to refuse—and thanks to their disobedience and spiritual bravery, we have several manuscripts of the only gospel that was written in the name of a woman: The Gospel of Mary Magdalene.

Mary's gospel reveals a radical love that sits at the heart of the Christian story. Her gospel says that we are not sinful; we are not to feel ashamed or unworthy for being human. In fact, our purpose is to be fully human, to be a "true human being"—that is, a person who has remembered that, yes, we are a messy, limited ego, and we are also a limitless soul.

And all we need to do is to turn inward (again and again); to meditate, like Mary Magdalene, in the way her gospel directs us, so that we can see past the ego of our own little lives to what's more real, and lasting, and infinite, and already here, within.

With searing clarity, Watterson explains how and why Mary Magdalene came to be portrayed as the penitent prostitute and relates a more historically and theologically accurate depiction of who Mary was within the early Christ movement. And she shares how this discovery of Mary's gospel has allowed her to practice, and to experience, a love that never ends, a love that transforms everything.

Great to listen to

I liked this book because it clarifies my own experience of the divine. The writers journey from researching the story of Mary raised an awareness within herself and was illustrated beautifully in her description which was lovely to listen to.

Healing Ex-vangelical

Born to a practicing Catholic Mother and an agnostic Father, I attended bi-weekly mass services, and additional religious activities from conception until I left the (by then) Pentecostal church 5 days after my 41st Birthday. I obtained a BA in Christian Leadership in 2009 which was the beginning of the end of my relationship with the church. It has taken me 3.5 years to finally listen to this amazing book. I have been struggling with the idea that my time submerged in the religious world was not an accident, but rather an important aspect of my journey in this lifetime. Meggan's Storytelling had me completely captivated. I am so very grateful to have this book. I feel it holds an important link in my moving forward on my journey, understanding that my 41 years in the church are an integral part of who I am. I am blessed to have found a Red Thread Sister's Circle ⭕ and I am excited to be deepening my connection with Mary Magdalene and the other awesome women mentioned in this incredible book.
p.s I have a feeling this review will post under my husband's name. It was written by Michelle Marie Thomas Edwards

Tears of joy

Narrated by the author, the book was absolutely spell binding from start to finish.
This book fills in all the gaps. Those left by the erasure of women in the faith, due to the patriarchs.

Beautiful book...

Deep and wonderful. Time to end the male dominance which so unbalances our world.
Women clearly have much to add to our spiritual understanding and practice. I've never understood the domination by men in both religious and political spheres .. of course, the results of this lack of balance speak for themselves.
I find myself siding with the authors view of Mary Magdaline, as a spiritual leader, an apostle.
The harlot story is an attempt to discredit.
I'm not Christian and have no particular affinity for the Christ story, but enjoyed the idea of his humanity in this retelling of the Mary Magdalene narrative.
