About this listen

Marjorie Morningstar is a love story. It presents one of the greatest characters in modern fiction: Marjorie, the pretty 17-year-old who left the respectability of New York's Central Park West to join the theater, live in the teeming streets of Greenwich Village, and seek love in the arms of a brilliant, enigmatic writer. In this memorable novel, Herman Wouk, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, has created a story as universal, as sensitive, and as unmistakably authentic as any ever told.

Critic reviews

"Herman Wouk's Marjorie Morningstar is timeless.... Gabra Zackman has a sweet, warm voice, which she mixes with a seriousness that complements Wouk's prose and dialogue. Zackman's ability to change tone, from high-pitched to deep and feminine to breathless, brings the book and its personalities to life.... With Zackman at the mike, every chapter brings a new reason to continue." (AudioFile)

An intriguing story of coming of age in Jewish New York in the 50s. The story is drawn out & at times you just want to slap the main characters with a wet fish. It is a philosophical book but I do question whether some of the characters would have the emotional or intellectual at their age. The writing is however, wonderful and it is worth reading for all the secondary characters who in my mind, made the listen worthwhile. And Gabra Zackman’s sensitive and strong performance helps the listener from getting lost in the plot or the people.

A long listen.

Hadn’t read this book since my ‘teens - long gone, but several scenes were imprinted on my memory. Gabra Zackman succeeded brilliantly in bring these (and others) to life, along with all of Herman Wouk’s characters. The story and narration held me from start to finish, transporting me to the United States in the 1930s and beyond. Recommended.

Enjoyable story, excellent narration
