“Nobody will ever love you like a dog. Nobody will ever be as consistently happy to see you. Nobody will ever make you so glad to be alive.”

It all started when nine-year-old Jasmine wanted a dog and her parents, Tony and Yuriko, tried to fob her off with a rabbit. In the end, along came Stan, a bandy-legged bundle of joy, loyalty and bright red fur. And nothing like a rabbit. Set against the backdrop of Tony’s life in Hampstead and their daily walks across the Heath, with its rolling hills, ponds and cast of star-studded, dog-walking neighbours – this is a poignant, funny and deeply human memoir about a special relationship with a four-legged friend.

Full of Tony’s reliably moving, wise and heartfelt writing, Man & Dog: A Love Story captures the ineffable bond between a man and his dog.

Tony Parsons is an award-winning journalist and a bestselling novelist. His first job in journalism was as a staff writer on the NME and for the last thirty years, he has been one of the most widely-read columnists in Fleet Street. Last year Tony wrote about the loss of his beloved dog Stan in The Sun on Sunday, a column that went viral and inspired his memoir Man & Dog: A Love Story.

I lost my beautiful boy from the same illness that took Stan, just 10 days ago. He was my life and I can't stop crying since I too watched my baby leave this life for the Rainbows Bridge at the hands of a gentle vet. Tony expressed the joy and the pain experienced when a dog comes into your life, and when they leave. Every deeply felt sentiment and emotion expressed in this book just shows why this man is a best selling author. I don't feel quite so alone now because of this book, and am also of an age when getting another dog would be selfish. From my broken heart to you, thank you for sharing this beautiful dedication to Stan. Hope my Tommy gets to say hello to Stan up at the bridge.

beautiful, profound and helped more than Tony will ever know.

The most heartwarming, heartbreaking story I’ve listened to. Tony narrates it so well and keeps it together. We all need a Stan at some point in our lives.

Having lost our beautiful , characterful , fun loving Ruby cavalier , Henry , in July 2025 , Tony’s book resonates completely with me.

Lovely , interesting , funny read with the emotional heartbreak of losing your best friend , who means the world to you. Just like Tony , I miss my boy everyday and smile , laugh , and shed tears regularly as he always remains in my thoughts and will never leave my heart.

A great book , the unconditional love and the bond that you have with your dog can never be broken , and it was a brilliant heartfelt tribute to the boy he will always love.

Well done Tony , Your boy Stan will be beaming with pride , bushy red tail wagging , waiting to see you one day…….over the Rainbows Bridge.
