Magical Girl Rending Nightmare

My name is Magical Girl Rending Nightmare. I was the first. The origin point. The spark that lit the fire.

Twelve of us were chosen—twelve magical girls to protect the Earth. We failed. Now the planet is little more than shattered debris drifting through space.

I should be dead. Instead, I’ve awakened on a strange new world, pulled here by Magical Girl Crystal Genocide, the youngest of us all. She says I was sealed away on a planet shaped by my own magic. She might be right.

This place reeks of old wars and strange symbols. It is filled with men who call themselves Stalkers, scavenging ruins in search of miracles. I think this world belongs to another of us. One of the twelve.

We have to find her. We have to save her. And then, together, we’ll find the rest—before it's too late.

Incredible as always, cant wait for book 3

I really loved the final third of this book, but unfortunately, the first two thirds were incredibly slow at times, with the two magical girls trying to more or less blend in, meaning that they actively avoided doing magic as much as possible. I don’t think it's much of a stretch to say that if someone is buying a novel about magical girls, they might be expecting a story about girls dping magical things.

Also, there are a lot of chapters from the perspective of a secondary character that the protagonist meets later in the story. From the point at which they meet up, these chapters are interesting, as they give a local's perspective of the two magical girls and how worrying their magical powers can be... unfortunately, almost all of this character’s chapters in the first two thirds of the book are pretty much just her stumbling through places the protagonist has already been, adding virtually nothing to the worldbuilding and certainly not advancing the plot at all.

As with the flashback chapters in the first book, this character’s earlier chapters feel like pointless fluff added just to pad out the runtime (or the page count, in regular book format). And unlike in the first book, this isn't even a main character, so after the end of this book, she's no longer even plot relevant.

So unfortunately, I can't give this book as high a rating as I did for the first. Still, I'll be buying the third book when it comes out, and hopefully I'll be able to enjoy it from beginning to end. I will say that the epilogue on this book has given me hope that the following one will be more action-packed.

Very Slow Start, Great Ending
