About this listen

Cloud of Spruce, the ancestral home of the Lesley clan, is situated amid orchards and spruce woods with a perfect view of Prince Edward Island harbor. Six-year-old Marigold Lesley is sure that the sound of the wind through the trees is the whispers of fairies; that just over the hill is a beautiful Hidden Land; and that her friend Sylvia—who no one else can see—will always be waiting to play with her. Marigold lives with her understanding mother, her curmudgeonly Old Grandmother, and her strict Young Grandmother who doesn't approve of imaginary friends.

L.M. Montgomery wrote four linked short stories that follow this charming girl to age twelve. Marigold's world opens up with visits from her huge, eccentric Lesley family; she loves them all (because you have to love your family) but a teasing boy cousin and "perfect" girl cousin are challenging. So too are the germaphobic aunt and religious zealot uncle and a host of other zany characters she visits. Her great joy is to find life "int'resting" and despite their idiosyncrasies, they all are that.

And there is always Sylvia to return to. But as Marigold gets older, it becomes more difficult to find Sylvia ...

Excellent descriptive writing but lacked a developing plot. The reader was pretty good. Not as captivating as some of her other books.
