Story
Wealthy and arrogant, Gabriel Penhallow knows it's time to fulfill his dynastic duty. All he must do is follow "The Penhallow way" - find a biddable bride, produce an heir and a spare, and then live separate lives. It's worked so well for generations, certainly one kiss with the delectable Livia Stuart isn't going to change things. Society dictates he marry her, and one chit is as good as another as long as she's from a decent family.

Story
Although this story's particular events could not have happened anywhere except in British-India, everyone will feel at home in its sunny atmosphere. The three girls who lived these adventures were completely different, but they formed a close-knit trio and shared all of each other's joys and problems. Poopy possessed a face that seemed blank to everyone but her two friends, who read it with ease.

Story
This wonderful series opens with the back drop of the Wars of the Roses with the marriage between Eleanor Morland and a scion of the influential house of Beaufort. It is a union which establishes the powerful Morland dynasty and in the succeeding volumes of this rich tapestry of English life, we follow their fortunes through war and peace, political upheaval and social revolution, times of pestilence and periods of plenty, and through the vicissitudes which afflict every family - love and passion, envy and betrayal, birth and death, great fortune and miserable penury.

Curate's egg
I love all the Eva Ibbotson books and can read them on a loop. Unfortunately I had to go for the abridged versions on Audible because the Kate Lock unabridged ones are impossible to listen to. (I returned mine - which means you can't review them...but other reviewers have said exactly what I think anyway.) This one is better; at least the voice is quite pleasant and the reading sympathetic. However, all the foreign phrases are so mispronounced as to be unintelligible (and she does absolutely the worst Geordie accent I've ever heard). A cringe. Don't the actors think to research this first? And isn't there an editor at Audible who can help when they mess up? Does nobody check? I don't think that is asking too much.

Sweet, very special book!
It's a very sweet touching book. It's a shame is abridged. I am
a hopeless romantic and really enjoyed it! Eva Ibbotson's writing is really magical!
