About this listen

First published in 1869, Lorna Doone is the story of John Ridd, a farmer who finds love amid the religious and social turmoil of 17th-century England. He is just a boy when his father is slain by the Doones, a lawless clan inhabiting wild Exmoor on the border of Somerset and Devon. Seized by curiosity and a sense of adventure, he makes his way to the valley of the Doones, where he is discovered by the beautiful Lorna. In time their childish fantasies blossom into mature love - a bond that will inspire John to rescue his beloved from the ravages of a stormy winter, rekindling a conflict with his archrival, Carver Doone, that climaxes in heartrending violence. Beloved for its portrait of star-crossed lovers and its surpassing descriptions of the English countryside, Lorna Doone is R. D. Blackmore's enduring masterpiece.

Perfect choice of narrator for a classic book. I read the actual book about 30 years ago and it left an impression. I loved it.

This was an excellent story. I'd read the shortened version whilst at school & loved it so much, that when it was made into a TV series, I make sure that I wouldn't miss any of it. The series was so good that I now have it on DVD 📀. It's only now that I'm retired that I've had time to listen to the whole unabridged version.

I'd also like to say that I'm a member of (HF Holidays) that used to be Holiday Fellowship & that while it was Holiday Fellowship the company had a literature themed guided walking holiday at their Country House hotel in Exmoor so I was able to walk through the countryside doing a bit each day over a period of five days. So if others people enjoy the book & give a good review you could say that they may be interested in getting in touch with HF Holidays so they could walk in the countryside that the book was based in.

Dreadful recording. I had to buy a different version. It was a waste of a credit
