About this listen

Lord Sebastian Gresham is a battle-tested soldier and brilliant strategist. Yet all his life he’s had to hide his complete failure to decipher letters. In his own mind, he’s just stupid.

Lady Georgina Stane is beautiful, witty and brilliantly intelligent. Sebastian thinks it's a miracle that he’s found the perfect bride. He's head over heels in love, proud as a peacock and terrified.

If she finds out his secret, will he lose her love forever?

Lovely story dealt with dyslexia in a very sympathetic way. The characters were great and the narrator brought it to life once again

Superb

I loved the comedy scenes such as the defeat of Druston, and Sebastian’s conversations with the loopy relations etc. characters wonderful fun, and it expresses the period when a lot of people were beginning to be interested in other cultures and getting it wrong!
How he hides his disability and has those unspoken conversations with the valet is very cleverly described- I learned a lot about dyslexia from this story.

The only thing to dislike was the lapses into American English word choice, and the sex scenes were pretty unrealistic for the time, even for a girl from an eccentric family- anyone who’s sprained a knee knows you couldn’t turn enjoyably have sex on a pile of bracken in a sinkhole .. or anywhere actually. 🙄

The hilarious dialogue and descriptions!

The hero is definitely the most delightful character despite his affliction and self doubt. It's so pleasant to listen to a book without malice. Excellent narration.

Gentle, charming story

It is hard to put into words the traversty of this story. The dyslexic hero, who has somehow managed to reach a high rank. One assumes his valet/batman (the only one in the secret). Not only writes his letters/orders, but also reads them. I wonder how that works in battle? He is a Duke's son and has been considered "dumb" all his life. This wasn't unusual as interbreeding made it a common problem. Then the Heroine; her nasty, spoilt self-centred sisters, insane Governess, delusional father and negligent mother. The pugs are at least playing themselves, the are as obnoxious in true life. Their besotted owners, always think them beautiful, full of character and perfect.
The poor Indian visitor, can at least return home, having seen his colonists in their true light.
The story is made up of set pieces that come out of the blue. Have very tenuous links, that are preposterous beyond belief. It was hard work to listen to the end.
This isn't a good understanding or explanation of dyslexic, but generalised pontificating.

Starts out based in reality.
