If I had to describe Sean Bailey, it would be: A surly, temperamental pain in my ass. Never in that equation would I ever include the word boyfriend - and not just because he’s straight. The older brother of my life-long best friend, Sean is a detective for the Chicago PD, and is also known as Detective “Dick” for being...well, a surly, temperamental pain in everyone’s ass. He also happens to be the best they have, which is why I find myself on his doorstep the night my life is threatened by an anonymous stalker.

Story
I left my family and tiny Texas hometown 15 years ago to escape small-town gossips and to give my mom and sister the chance at a better life. But when a phone call from an attorney back home informs me that my sister passed away, leaving me custody of her newborn baby, I'm shocked out of the steady life I've built for myself running a tattoo shop in San Francisco. The thing is: I don't do babies. And I don't do small towns. Or commitment. And I especially don't do family.

Summary
Niall’s never known anything but betrayal. All Mat wants is Niall’s heart. What will it take for him to coax Niall in from the cold?
Mat's connection with Niall is tenuous; one step forward, two steps back. Since that night on the beach Niall's been avoiding Mat like a bad case of the flu - which, ironically, most of his deputies have come down with. What will it take for Niall to truly believe Mat wants him for who he is?
Mat's overworked, Niall's unnerved, and then things really go sideways.
Will a killer destroy everything before Niall realizes they are stronger together than apart?
Long Shadow is a dual POV about a broody introvert and a somewhat patient sheriff. Mat’s going to have to prove to Niall he's the man for him. The Hamarsson and Dempsey series follows the same couple as they find their way to their happily ever after.

More!
Long Shadow shows us more about Niall and Mat. There’s suspense, and arson and a possible killer on the loose. I loved that this books keep me on my toes, searching for clues while also rooting for Niall to come to his senses and just accept love. The characters are endearing, Mat’s family is so sweet and supportive plus that surprise for Niall at the end. I would say they have their happily ever after but there is a sequel that I can’t wait to listen to!

Amazing!
5 Stars Long Shadow is book 2 in the Hamarsson and Dempsey series and it needs to be read/listened to in order. This review may contain spoilers. Niall is being difficult at the start of the book and still keeping Mat at arm's length, which I totally get, don't get me wrong. He's had a hard life and it's not easy for him to let anyone—not even Mat, who truly has the patience of a saint—in. As if that wasn't enough, the fires have continued in Piedras island and now they're escalating. I'm really enjoying this series, well, other than wanting to shake some sense into Niall, although I will admit it he got much better around halfway through the story. Mat was amazing as always and continues being my favorite of the two of them. They have great chemistry and I felt like the progression of their relationship, while slow, was very organic, especially considering Niall's issues. I loved that we got to see more of them as a couple this time around. The mystery of the fires was partially, yet satisfyingly, solved, so even if there are still a few things that need to be addressed, I don't feel like I was left hanging. I just hope Ms. Keaton hurries up with it because I need the next book pronto! LOL Michael Dean never ceases to amaze me. He has such a wide range of voices and does a fantastic job every single time with his performance, which translates on him not only giving each character a distinctive voice but bringing them and the story to life with his narration. Overall, if you've read Conspiracy Theory, you absolutely need to listen to Long Shadow and if you haven't, what are you waiting for? Pick both books/audiobooks, because you're missing out on a great series otherwise.

Mat and Niall are back!
More mysteries to solve, danger to face and those pesky emotions to deal with (for Niall anyway). A good continuation of Niall and Mat's story with a twisted web of crime and some new found family, this story was a good escape away to Piedras. I like seeing Niall and Mat moving forward and only one storyline is left open at the end and I look forward to seeing what happens next!

Nice slow burn with lots of mystery.
I read Long Shadow when the ebook came out in May 2020 and I was so excited to get the opportunity to listen to and review the audio version. *Michael Dean did a fantastic job with this book, just like he did with book one, Conspiracy Theory. I started listening to this with the intention of catching up on some chores while I listened. Since I'd already read the book, I figured I didn't have to pay really close attention while listening to the audio version. WRONG! LOL I was totally captivated by the story all over again and couldn't let myself concentrate on anything else while I listened to it. Michael Dean's voice is so easy to listen to. He does unique voices for each character so it's easy to tell who is talking. I really love the different female voices he used in this one (there are several). I've been known to shed more than one or two tears while reading a book but that doesn't always guarantee that the audio version will affect me as deeply. Long Shadow absolutely engaged my emotions as much or more than when I read the book. Below is the review I wrote back in May. Long Shadow is book two in the Hamarsson and Dempsey series with the main couple continuing throughout the series. Book one had a very satisfying HFN and this one even more so. The author does a great job of giving us information from book one that we need to enjoy this story. So, I kind of think you could read this without having read Conspiracy Theory but then you'd be missing a great book. There is a lot of mystery and intrigue going on in Long Shadow and it kept me on the edge of my seat in places. A couple of things happened that I didn't see coming which is always nice when reading romantic suspense. Mat and Niall's relationship moves along at a steady pace, with Niall pretty much fighting it at every turn until he finally gives in. I'm a big fan of slow-burn romance and this is a great one. If you're looking for hot and spicy time being front and center this might not be the book for you. What it is though, is a wonderfully crafted story with interesting characters and enough suspense to keep you engaged until the end. Some mysteries are solved in this book but there are still underlying issues that aren't resolved. I really wouldn't call this a cliffhanger because we definitely know that Mat and Niall are a couple and I didn't feel like I was left hanging so much that I'll die if I can't read the next one tomorrow. Don't take that to mean that I didn't love this, or don't want the next one as soon as possible, because I do. But the story was complete enough to leave me very satisfied and not unhappy that I'll have to wait until next year to read it. A copy of this audio book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author. ***Reviewed for Xtreme-Delusions dot com*** (Posting on August 14, 2020.)

I really love Mat and Niall. They read to me as believable characters. They are not perfect but try to make their relationship work. I also like the mystery aspect of these books. So Good!!!
First of all, let me just say that I love Michael Dean. I choose to listen to so many authors that I am not familiar with as soon as I see that he is the narrator. He did an excellent job in this book as well as with book 1. Now. Elle Keaton. I believe she is a new to me author and this is only the second book I have read of hers because I read book 1 of the series and I loved it. I couldn't wait for book 2 so purchased it immediately. I was not disappointed. This book has just the right amount of mystery, danger, angst and romance along with humor to make it a perfect read or listen. I am not a fan of any angst in a story but Elle Keaton's writing makes it okay. I love books with an overreaching plot that last throughout a series if it is done properly. Keaton does it very well. The end of each book so far, even though all the mysteries are not solved, gives you just enough closure that if you didn't listen to the next book you will be okay, but enough of a subtle cliff hanger to make you want to know more. The next book will be out in a few weeks and I hope the audible version isnt far behind. The book can be a standalone but you definitely need to read book 1 to get the full effect of what's going on. This series is so worth every credit used.

Love this series!
This is one fantastic series from one of my favorite authors. Long Shadow continues with the story of Niall and Mat, who we met in Book 1 Conspiracy Theory. This book continues with small town sheriff Mat and ex-detective Niall and their developing friendship/relationship. These two are great together; the chemistry is so obvious. If you enjoy romantic suspense with strange mysteries, sexiness, hotness, and low angst try this series. The story is told from dual POVs, which I love, and it aids in getting to know the characters better. The plot and mystery are both interesting and well executed. The narrator Michael Dean is so good and does a wonderful job; he has a nice, clear voice that helped me visualize these guys perfectly. MD makes you actually "feel" the emotions flowing through both men and that makes the audio so much more riveting. I read book 1 and listened to book 2 in audio and MD's narration really brings the story to life for me. His performance is so good I now want book 1 in audio!

the story continues........
Long Shadow is book 2 in the Hamarsson and Dempsey series and needs to be enjoyed after book 1, as there's a continuing story. This book continues the story of Niall and Mat. They are still trying to figure out their relationship when more fires are being set. I loved the first book and this one did not disappoint. Mystery, suspense, attempted murder, arson, Piedras Island has a lot going on. I love the twists and turns the story takes, and can't want for the next book. What other adventures await Niall and Mat? Narrator Michael Dean does an amazing job.

Shadows always disappear
So the story of Niall and Matt continues here with a dash of mystery as usual. I think this book focused on self-discovery, healing and relationship development rather than the mystery aspect. Niall decided to retire us job as a detective, stay on the island and and nurture back his grandparents’ place. And Matt is still coming to terms with the death of his brother. Both are embracing their fledgling relationship while trying to navigate the news paths in their life. There is also an arsonist going rampant on the island and it’s up to them to arrest him and bring peace to the island again. It was very balanced, romance, mystery, a bit of angst and some sweetness. I really enjoyed this audio and I can’t wait for next audio in the series so I can finally see all those unresolved mysteries on the island. 4 Shadows always disappear stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Audio rating Story - 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Narration - 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Performance - 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Overall - 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Longshadow Mmy Thoughts and Review: **This could get a little spoilery regarding Book #1 and the relationship between the MCs. If you have NOT read Book #1, read my review at your own discretion... or peril. 😂 Ok, going to get this part done because for anyone who has read more than five of my audio reviews, you know this to be a universal truth... I could listen to Michael Dean recite death metal lyrics all day and still swoon as I did over Andrew McCarthey's smirk in "Pretty in Pink," for the first time. Yes, I'm old...ancient news. Back to Mikey! My eardrums live for that deep whiskey smooth and honey-coated voice to tell them stories of men falling in love. OHHH and sweet Georgia Brown, that laugh can make a million butterflies take flight. If you have never acquainted yourself with the vocal talent of this narrator, this series is the perfect chance. Be sure you pick up book #1 first, however. This is a continuing series, and while it can be listened to and appreciated on its own, there is no way to love, root for, understand, and crave for the MCs to overcome all they need to without the foundation you get laid down for you in the first book. I absolutely loved book two. As soon as the story began, I knew it was going to be one of those "greet the dawn," stories. It very nearly was, but my old body zonked out around four something. When I woke at ten the next morning I had around half an hour left. In book two, there is still the unsolved arson cases and new ones piling up. Hamarsson is on his way back to his new/ old home, while Sheriff Mat Dempsey is dealing with an illness that has taken out half of his department. Unfortunately, when your department only consists of four, half the force is the difference between a small community's survival with an arsonist still at large. I love all the mystery and intrigue Keaton brings to this small town. So many skeletons linger, and secrets from decades of how things from a past generation did things differently. With Mat in his father's role as Sheriff some people still find it hard to swallow, no matter how long he's been doing it now. If Matt and Niall can find common ground and stay put on it, they might actually be able to unlock all the closet doors. Niall Hamarsson has to stop running and face his demons first. Unfortunately, the arsonist might get to Matt before anything good can happen for them. There really is no getting out of this one unscathed. Nail biting, foot shaking, causing my cat anxiety as I mumble out loud and make comments about what's happening great story! Keep 'em comin', Elle! 💜 The Story: 4.50 🌟🌟🌟🌟.✨ Narration:4.50 🌟🌟🌟🌟.✨ Sharonica Stars: are-those-fireworks-or-are-you-just-happy-to-see-me-stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟.✨ I received an audio copy of this book from GRR in exchange for my review. 🎧🌈🎧

4.5 stars for this sequel!
I thoroughly enjoyed the first audiobook in the Hamarsson & Dempsey series, so it goes without saying that I was looking forward to listening to the second audiobook as well. Long Shadow continues the story of the titular characters, Niall Hamarsson and Mat Dempsey, so it is NOT a standalone. Readers new to the series will have to read the series starter, Conspiracy Theory, before heading into Long Shadow in order to have the best kind of reading experience and better appreciation for these characters and what these men go through as their story and relationship progress. Just when Niall and Mat have made inroads in their relationship, things between not only stall but seem to take a leap backwards. Mat would love nothing more than for Niall to consider some sort of future for them, but with Niall actively avoiding Mat, communication between them is at a standstill, leaving Mat at a loss. To make matters worse, almost all of Mat's deputies seem to have been taken down by the same flu strain, leaving him to pick up much of the slack. But as overworked as he is, he's vowed to be patient with Niall, but will Niall's realization that he and Mat are stronger when they're together simply fall to the wayside with a killer on the loose? Once again pairing Elle Keaton's writing with Michael Dean's narration, Long Shadow kept my interest for the most part. Niall had a lot of personal growth here, which was a long time coming and rather necessary if there was any hope for him and Mat to actually move forward. Mat, as always, was a pillar of support, and not just for Niall. The guy has more patience in his pinky finger than I do in my entire body, and kudos to him for that. The suspense and mystery aspects were interesting, although in comparison to the first book, it lacked some oomph. While the story may not have been at par with its predecessor, the narration was spot-on as always, but then that's what I've come to expect from Dean. Five stars for narration, and four stars for story.

I loved it!
I few months ago I listened to the first book in this series and absolutely loved it. Since then I’ve been eagerly waiting for Long Shadow to be released so I could spend more time with Mat and Niall. This book is a continuation of the first book so I wouldn’t recommend reading or listening to them out of order. But I do recommend both of them. I listened to this book in one go. Nothing existed for me outside the book for the hours I spent listening to it and I didn't want it to end. No one can argue that Mat doesn’t have his hands full trying to prevent and solve crimes on the island. In the first book there was the devastating fire that burned Niall’s home to the ground. They thought they caught, in a manner of speaking, the one responsible for it, but someone is still setting fires around the island and Mat is desperately trying to figure out who and why. He’s also trying to figure out some suspect and possible criminal behaviour from a colleague. All of this while juggling his new relationship with Niall. Niall for his part isn’t idle, he’s dealing with the aftermath of his family home burning down and moving back to his home town. He might have left his detective life behind him when he moved back to the island, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t notice suspicious behaviours around town. Things that he feels obligated to investigate. The majority of this book deals with the mysteries and how they are all connected. I love mysteries, and I love procedurals so this is never a problem for me. And these mysteries were compelling and kept me interested and I kept moving the pieces around to make them fit. Unlike the first book, we have an actual romance between Mat and Niall this time around. Tentative at first but then things really heat up between them. They both have issues, so the relationship isn’t without some hick-ups, but that’s also why it’s believable, make them believable. They fit together and they are both what the other needed to move forward. The narration Michael Dean was great, I love listening to his deep voice and he takes you to Piedras Island. The voices he had for Niall and Mat were great and fit their personalities really well. It also makes it easy to follow conversations and keeping track of different characters. I really enjoyed the interactions with Mat’s niece, she was sweet and it was nice to see everyone melt around her. I’ve had such a great time and I hope this won’t be the last book in the series. I’m just not ready to say goodbye to these guys. A copy of this book was generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review for Love Bytes.
