Summary

On a stormy night in March 1941, Maisie Rose Hawkins leaves her drunk husband, Stan, out in the rain - and he disappears. Detective Sergeant Bob Robbins and young PC Laurie Oliver are called out to investigate and discover that Stan’s small fishing boat is gone, the rope sawn through.

As Bob searches for answers, it becomes apparent that in this small Cornish village where everyone knows everything about everybody, nobody quite knows the truth. Beneath the surface of village life a fierce battle is being waged against wartime deprivations.

Food inspector Archibald Bantry, charged with enforcing those restrictions, dies in a suspicious car crash. And what seems like the work of local malcontents becomes more complex and dangerous when Bob stumbles on the truth: a much deadlier affair is underway.

Enjoyable listen

Set during WWII in a small Cornish fishing village this is a tale of village life during the war, with some added mystery thrown in. When Maisie's husband goes missing DS Bob Robbins is called in to investigate. However there is much more to this audio book that a missing man. With everyone watching each other, secrets, lies and good and bad characters, it tells the story of a small community trying to survive during the war. A really enjoyable audiobook with a whole range of characters good and bad, this was an enjoyable listen.

Engaging

A really engaging story. Set in a Cornish fishing village during WWII there is a hint of espionage, a possible murder and of course smuggling. Believable, likeable characters make this a thoroughly enjoyable read.

An enjoyable story

I was fortunate to receive a code for a free copy of this book in return for a review, and I am glad I did.

This is a well written and descriptive whodunit set in a small Cornish town during WW2. I would not normally select a book with a historical setting, but I enjoyed the mystery and intrigue and overall it is highly recommended.
