A story written from three viewpoints, so three narrators. It's a Goldilocks situation, with one too slow, one too loud, and one just right. I did get the impression they struggled with some of the dialogue, it felt like it needed a little more editing. Some would argue that's because it's a debut novel, but was it a debut editor too?
Two of three characters are really unlikeable, almost impossible to engage or empathise with, and the only character you do root for is treated so poorly and walks away with nothing when she sacrificed everything. Very disappointing.
There is a change of pace halfway through, some will call it a twist, but it's so poorly written that it doesn't even come with impact, just a shrug.
The action is confusing, the horror scenes are vulgar and puerile and far too drawn out so they lose their impact. Towards the end I knew I was going to walk away disappointed, but unfortunately for me I'm a completionist. Listening to this was not time well spent.
